Th< C w Th c 0- sc Aggie Flashback The following information was gathered from past issues of The Battalion and reflects issues that occurred during this week in A&M’s history. 10 years ago — In letters to the editor of The Battalion , students wrote to express their concern about receiving better informa tion about rapes on campus. The students wanted to see factual news articles about on-campus safety rather than having to rely on gossip. ries, a mess hall and two engi neering buildings were named. The names were selected from among former presidents of Texas A&M, directors and out standing citzens. Some of the new buildings named were Duncan Dining Hall, H.H. Harrington Classroom Building and F.C. Bol ton Hall. 25 years ago — A student from Baylor painted the Lawrence Sul livan Ross statue green during the Baylor-Texas A&M football game weekend. 50 years ago — Fifteen new cam pus huildines. including dormito- 75 years ago — A&M and the University of Texas were seeking to achieve more friendly relations between the two schools. UT sent the A&M football team compli mentary tickets to see UT play Oklahoma in Dallas. It was also the intention of the A&M Corps of Cadets to root for UT during the game as a representation of the growing friendliness between the two institutions. R.E.M. audiences into one big R.E.M. coali tion. r (Continued from page 9) Tagging along for the show is Py lon, a fellow ALhens hand that is re ceiving great praise for their current reunion tour. Egged on by R.E.M; proclamation that Pylon is their fa vorite band, guitarist Randy Bewley, bassist Michael Lacowski, drummer Curtis Crowe and vocalist Vanessa Briscoe have reformed, releasing greatist hits CD. Pylon coupled with R.E.M. makea Sunday night show that is a “can’t miss.” Hey, I’ll be the first to admit that R.E.M. has lost their early spunk and sprouted out an extra head, but miss the show — NO WAY! has stood just to the left of popular music, adding their quirky flavor to some of this decade’s best melodies. Stipe’s haunting lyrics, Buck’s jangly riffs, and Berry/Mill’s tranquil rhythms have satisfied America’s al ternative circles, while enrapturing mainstream FM listeners. In the truest sense, R.E.M. has be come the classic crossover band, fu sing together the previously incom patible underground and top-40 Reed (Continued from page 9) number-one-bull-goose-hero of the acoustic guitar (six- and 12-string) . . . Not many people have heard of him, because his style falls between the cracks: He ain’t New Age, he ain’t folky, he ain’t jazz, and he ain’t rock. Well, then, what is he? Very, very fast. More orchestral than Stan ley Jordan. Early Leo Kottke is probably the closest precedent, so lets call him neo-Leo and start a new genre just for Reed.” Certainly no classification is needed to recommend this show Reed is a true guitar hero and an ex pert in the latest genre of guitar ex perimentation. Any guitarist who has been compared to Stanley Jor dan, Pat Metheny or John Fahey de serves a checkout on those creden tials alone. Good Times Liquor Kegs $45°° (includes ice & cups) 16 Gal.
