Battalion Classified 845-2611 EPA analyst says more trees needed to wane warming SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Forest ers can help in the battle against global warming by planting more trees now, an Environmental Protec tion Agency official told foresters on Monday. “Forest management decisions should begin considering climate very soon,” said Kenneth Andrasko, senior forest analyst with the EPA policy and analysis office in Wash ington. Andrasko and Mike Hall, director of the climatic and atmospheric re search office for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminis tration, spoke on the phenomenon of global warming to about 100 peo ple at a National Association of State Foresters conference. Global warming involves a so- called “greenhouse effect” in which heat can be reflected from Earth or trapped in the atmosphere. Carbon emissions contribute to the trend. Deforestation, particularly in tropical areas, is contributing to an increase of carbon in the atmo sphere, Andrasko said. Countries with high levels ofdefo restation include Brazil, Indonest Colombia and Thailand. In the United States forest land: being lost at a rate of 1.3 millio: acres a year, although some is beiii, replaced, he said. Climatic change will be a bigissut affecting forestry in the years i come and could mean a higher prr> file, more money and service 01 more national committees forthosf in the field, Andrasko said. Through increasing harvest effi ciency and tree planting in temper ate climatic zones more carbon cat f>e stored in growing trees and lea emitted into the atmosphere, An drasko said. Such programs have nr: begun but are likely to start soon, lit added. “There’s very active consideratioi, of this program as we speak,” he said after his presentation. Besides storing carbon in growin; trees, some advantages of reforesta lion include recharge of groundwa ter aquifers and creating new hab itats for wildlife, Andrasko said.
