Page 12 The Battalion Thursday, September 28,1989 Van Brandt (Continued from page 11) mmates, but, being a captain, you have to let the players know when they’re not doing their jobs,” Van Yvonne Van Brandt Brandt said. “It can be tough to bal ance both needs.” However, she said that she gets along well with the players. “Having Kelli Kellen as my co-captain really helps,” Van Branclt said. It is that chemistry that has made the Lady Aggies gel as a playing unit, winning their last three matches of the season. “In the 14 years that I’ve been coaching women’s volleyball, this team is by far the most cohesive,’ Givens said. “Yvonne is the glue that holds this team together because of her position and skills.” Van Brandt, who celebrated her twenty-first birthday on Monday, at tributes some of her patience to coaching a women’s team this sum mer. Van Brandt coached a group of high school seniors in a national tournament this summer. “I think (coaching) helped me see things from a different angle,” she said. “Now I have a better feeling for what coach Givens sees. Playing all of the positions that I’ve played in my career makes it easier to under stand how the other players think.” Van Brandt has been a starter since her sophomore season and played most of her freshman year, sharing a spot in the backcourt with Kellen. Earlier this season Givens shifted Van Brandt from setter to outside attacker. Although the move partially was made to give other players some practice at the setter spot, Givens said Van Brandt hit and blocked well. “I liked getting the chance to at tack,” Van Brandt said. “It’s fun to swing away. Givens moved her back into the setting role last week, and he wants her there the rest of the season. “She does so many things well, but we need her most in the setter’s spot,” he said. Favre (Continued from page 11) year passing, averaging over 200 faerie yards per game, the Eagles have lost thre their last tin ee games to Mississippi State, Auburn and TCU. USM coach Gurley Hallman, a former assistant coach at A&M, is happy with Favre’s performance. “He’s playing well,” Hallman said. “Brett has made a mistake here and there, but he’s running for his life and still having a good year. With the pressure he’s getting from pass rushes, it’s amazing that he’s any where near those numbers. “Our injuries, lack of depth, and the quality of our opponents have mismatched our line most of the time this year. Because of the mis- “That interception may have been the biggest in my college career,” he said. “If we had gotten even three points, we might have won.” For someone that Southern Mis sissippi has billed as a Heisman Tro phy candidate, it’s surprising that Favre doesn’t pay much attention to his own statistics. it I’ve played well this season, but not well enough to win. No matter how well you play, if you don’t win, nobody cares. ” —Brett Favre, So. Miss. QB match, the pressure has fallen on Brett.” But Favre is not happy with his performance. “I’ve played pretty well this sea son, but not well enough to win,” Favre said. “No matter how' well you play, if you don’t win, nobody cares. A&M coach R.C. Slocum has a slightly different view of Favre. There aren’t many teams we’ll play that will have a quarterback bet ter than this guy,” Slocum said. “He played very well against us as a true freshman two years ago. He’s got quite a bit of experience under his belt since then.” Favre completed 20 of his 36 passes against TCU, but said the loss was upsetting. “Completing 20 of 36 was good, but we didn’t win,” Favre said. With the Eagles trailing, they had the ball on the TCU one-yard line. However, Favre’s pass was inter cepted and TCU went on to win. “It would be nice to have good stats, but the most important thing is the won-lost column,” Favre said. “I don’t have good stats. I’ve al ready thrown four interceptions, and only three touchdowns (in 1989).” Besides, sometimes people put too much emphasis on statistics. That could be a problem because too many factors tie in to them, Favre said. “Anybody can drop back and complete a short pass,” he said. “Re ceivers can break loose and defend ers can drop bad passes, so stats can be decieving.” Favre believes that he can get the Eagles back on the winning track. “To improve, I’ve got to learn more about the defenses we’ll face,” he said. “I’ve been trying to force some passes. I’ve got to be a little more patient, and not rush or force throws. I’ve got players here who are capable of scoring on the ground. “I need to learn how to use the whole of fense.” Favre said that the A&M defense will be tough. “We’ll have our hands full. We look at them on tape, and can’t find any weaknesses,” he said. “They’re so good, I compare A&M to Au burn, and we didn’t do much against Auburn. “We’d like to establish a running game against A&M, but nobody else has been able to.” Regardless of their running suc cess, the Eagles are going to rely on the passing attack, said Favre. “We’re gonna throw anyway, but we’ll try to be balanced.” Balance will be the key if South ern Mississippi wants to get back in the win column. If Favre keeps per forming like the hype surrounding him suggests, it’ll be one of the big gest favors he’s given the Golden Ea gles. Astros’ Reynolds retires HOUSTON (AP) — Houston As tros infielder Craig Reynolds, an All- Star selection in both the American and National Leagues, announced his retirement Wednesday. Reynolds, 36, played for the As tros 11 seasons, participating in two, Western Division titles. He was an American League All- Star with Seattle in 1978 before com ing to the Astros the following sea son and earning a National League All-Star spot. “I thought pretty seriously about it at the end of last season,” Reynolds said. “Had the club not shown a real interest in wanting me back, I would have seriously considered retiring then.” Reynolds was hitting .203 prior to Wednesday night’s game against At lanta. “I’m not leaving the game feeling like anybody owes me anything,” Reynolds said. “I think it’s just the opposite. If anybody ow’es anything it’s me to say thanks to the organiza tion, the city, and people that sup ported us.” Reynolds is a Houston native and former Houston Reagan High School star. Tarpley gets starting nod as Mays’ forward DALLAS (AP) — Roy Tarpley, the most valuable sixth man in the NBA two years ago, has been el evated to a starting power forward position by Dallas Mavericks’ coach John MacLeod. Sam Perkins, who is currently ne gotiating a new contract with the Mavs, will be coming off the bench in Tarpley’s old role. Tarpley missed 63 of Dallas’ 82 regular season games last year be cause of knee surgery and a drug-re lated suspension. In his last five games after he was reinstated, Tar- averaged 24 points and 13 re- )unds. “Roy is ready to start playing full time now,” said MacLeod. “He has earned it.” The Mavs open training camp Oct. 6. Kevin Sullivan, Mavs’ public rela tions director, said MacLeod de cided to make the announcement before training camp so the players would know their roles going into the season. If center James Donaldson hasn’t recovered from major knee surgery, then Tarpley will play defensive cen ter and move to power forward on offense.
