A bacterial infection called pneu mococcus disease has killed two Har ris County Jail inmates and stricken several others in the crowded fa cility. Health officials Thursday were treating and vaccinating those inmates at risk of contracting the in fection. Timothy Lee Thomas, 18, was booked into the Harris County Jail last month. Officials were ready to release him on bond Wednesday, but they were unable to do so be cause Fort Bend County has a hold on him for an alleged offense com mitted there. Generally, that would result in a routine transfer from one jail to the other, but Fort Bend officials have nixed that action because they fear the inmate might have the infection and spread it to their jail. “The whole point of this is that we just don’t know what their status is there,” Frank Follis, first assistant district attorney in Fort Bend County, said. “It didn’t seem like a good idea to bring him here,” Follis said Thurs day. “I understand he is sick — I don’t know what he’s sick with,” Follis said, noting that family members have talked about Thomas being ill. Thomas is accused of violating! probation on a misdemeanor assai in Fort Bend County after being: rested in Houston for allegedlysf ing a $20 rock of crack cocaine.
