Pedestrian traffic along the sidewalks isjust as congested. “The sidewalks get so crowded that groups can’t stay together,” said Police Capt. Ruben Lopez. “Then somebody tries to squeeze through the crowd and elbows somebody, and before you know it you’ve got a fight.” With no vehicles on East Sixth Street, pedestrians will be able to use the street as well as the sidewalks for club-hopping, police said. Danny Shea, co-owner of the Maggie Mae’s club, said Sixth Street business owners he knows are willing to try the plan. Jury still hung in Lubbock bank fraud case LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — The jury is hung up in the bank-fraud trial of D.L. “Danny” Faulkner and six others, and the judge has urged them to try to arrive at a partial ver dict, a defense attorney said today. Defendants and attorneys from both sides met for about five minutes this morning in the chambers of U.S. District Judge Sam Cummings, but no one would comment on the na ture of the meeting. The judge has imposed a gag order. Both sides met with Cummings twice for a total of about 35 minutes Wednesday. Everyone involved, in cluding the judge and Assistant U.S. Attorney Terry Hart, was mum on the subject of the conferences. . MSC’s College Bowl offers challenge to trivia experts The jury has been deliberating since Aug. 23 on thie 88-count iridict- ment that accuses the defendants of conspiring to steal $ 13B million from savings and loans. The defendants are accused of defrauding the thrifts through fanciful appraisals and sham real-estate transactions on con- dominium-zoned land along Inter state 30 east of Dallas. By Todd Swearingen 1. m ^ : — Of The Battalion Staff One defense attorney, speaking on the condition of anonymity, would not disclose the nature of the talks with the judge, but said Cum mings has asked the deadlocked jury to arrive at a “partial verdict.” The attorney would not comment on whether that meant finding some defendants guilty and some inno cent, or finding them all guilty on some counts and innocent on others. Demonstrations were held Wednesday and Thurs day in the MSC Flag Room to announce open registra tion for a College Bowl intramural tournament to begin on Oct. 4. The demonstration was held between two teams of four made up of MSC Nova and Cepheid Variable members, as well as people from the audience. Public Relations Chairman Phillip Sulak said that the College Bowl’s motto is, “The varsity sport of the mind.” Sulak said the upcoming tournament will beadoul elimination competition to determine the champ and an additional four to eight outstanding pare pants. A regional team of four players and an altera; will be selected from the group of champions. “Generally, teams either are diverse — withdiffeif kinds of natures — or there are some teams have one person who’s really good and he earn them,” Sulak said. “Generally, teams with better nicknames do bettei because they took the time, they care enough to a good name.” Ash Ai Sulak explained that the game consists of two seven- and-a-half minute rounds in which the teams must an swer questions covering a wide range of topics. The teams are asked a 10-point toss up question followed by a bonus question of a specified value, Sulak said. Sulak said that a player must be acknowledged by the judge before answering a question. Texas DHS board adopts conflict-of-interest policy AUSTIN (AP) — The Texas Department of Human Services board tentatively adopted a tough conflict-of-interest policy for firms that want to do business with the agency. The six-member panel Wednesday unani mously approved a proposal requiring such firms to disclose any connections to current and for mer agency officials and employees. Board Chairman Rob Mosbacher Jr. said the policy should take effect later this year, after a public hearing and final board approval. may provide some leadership to the rest of state government.” DHS Commissioner Ron Lindsey said the pol icy threatens renewal of some contracts and “may cause some hardships.” “But we are trying to comply with what the Legislature wants, as clearly and openly as we can,” he said. The policy was prompted by a provision in the ms bill t< “It’s tough, but I think it’s fair, and I think it’s the right thing to do,” Mosbacher said. “This pol icy goes farther than the Legislature proposed.
