TCU isn’t without its share of problems either. j j Texas A&M at TCU • Site: Amon G. Carter Stadium • Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. • Ranking: A&M (22nd), TCU (un ranked) • Records: A&M (1-1), TCU (0-1) • TV/Radio: HSE (Ch. 25) tape de lay at 10:30 p.m. KTAM (AM 1240) Wacker has switched from a run- oriented offense to what TCU has coined a “Triple Shoot.” His offen sive scheme relies on three wide re ceivers, a tight end and a “super- back.” This type of offensive attack keeps defenses spread out and gues sing at what the offense will run. It’s similar to the style of attack Washington used so effectively in their 19-6 victory over the Aggies. The one catch is that Triple Shoot runs best when TCU senior running back Tony Darthard is healthy. Darthard was injured in last week’s 14-10 loss to Missouri. “We were ahead and easily win ning the football game when he was in the lineup,” Wacker said, “He went out and we never scored again.” Darthard will be out for at least two weeks and possibly the whole year. Injuries aren’t the only problem with TCU. The Horned Frogs rely heavily on a group of 18 inex perienced freshman. Aggie Coach R.C. Slocum isn’t taking TCU’s problems for granted. “TCU is dangerous,” Slocum said. “They had a bunch of yards against Missouri and you can see where they could have easily scored several touchdowns. “I’m concerned about defending the option and a passing game that is similar to Washington’s.” Even Darthard’s injury doesn’t ease Slocum’s mind. “Darthard’s injury takes away some of their speed, but what nor mally happens in a situation like that is that his replacement steps in as does just as well,” Slocum said. The Aggies, who normally play TCU at the end of the year, will meet TCU early to allow the televis ing of the A&M-Arkansas game in November by CBS. Is Wacker more comfortable play ing A&M, which has been known for its slow starts, earlier in the season? “We couldn’t beat them at the end of the year, we might as well try them early,” Wacker said. Texas A&M has been a thorn in the Horned Frogs side for over two decades. TCU hasn’t beaten the Ag gies since 1972. Overall, A&M leads the series 48-29-7. A&M has won the last 16 games, but Slocum plays down the Aggies dominance over TCU. “What happened 10 years ago isn’t important,” Slocum said. “They’ve got a new offense, we’ve got a new offense. Two new teams will meet out there Saturday and that’s what’s important.” Last year, Slocum got his first taste of being a head coach when Jackie Sherrill stepped down for a game due to the controversy sur rounding the football program over the George Smith scandal. In the game, Lewis rushed for 105 yards as the Aggies shut out TCU 18-0. A&M/TCU NOTES: Strong safety Gary Jones, who has played only one down all season, will play against TCU. Defensive end Jayson Black (sprained knee) is doubtful and center Mike Arthur (sprained knee) is questionable. Quarterback Lance Pavlas already ranks No. 11 in career completions at A&M with 84. He has played in just 16 games. Darren Lewis now needs just five yards to pass Roger Vick and be come the No. 5 in career rushers at A&M. Through 24 career games at A&M, Lewis is averaging 102.8 yards a game. Linebacker Aaron Wallace might miss Saturday’s game because he is inflicted with strep throat. He’s listed as day-to-day. Safety Larry Horton is averaging 32.5 yards per kickoff return this year. The last time TCU beat A&M in Fort Worth was 1971. The last time A&M travelled to Fort Worth, Lewis rushed for 194 yards. Senior TCU running back Tony Darthard is out for the game with a knee in jury. (Continued from page 9) Irish has problems at Michigan. But Bo (Schembechler) has problems at Iowa, he has problems at Ohio State, he has problems at Notre Dame. But nobody else has problems.” “That’s all in the judgment of an officials,” Holtz said. “It doesn’t have a thing to do with coaching.” Once upon a time, the war of noise between Michigan and Notre Dame was a more evenly matched contest. Knute Rockne had seen to that. When Notre Dame was planning its current stadium, Rockne traveled to Ann Arbor and came back with the blueprints for Michigan’s sta dium. “This is not fiction, this is fact,” Holtz said. “He built 60,000, just like Michi gan,” he said of Notre Dame Sta dium, whose official capacity is 59,075. Only the players’ entrance was different. But Michigan upped the ante with a new stadium. The Irish haven’t matched the stakes.
