Study says birth control pills do not increase risk of cancer BOSTON (AP) — The largest study ever to examine the effects of birth control pills offers reassuring evidence that middle-aged women who didn’t first take the pill until their mid-20s face no unusual risk of breast cancer. “Past use of oral contraceptives does not appear to increase the risk of breast cancer for women in their mid 40s and 50s,” said Dr. Walter C. Willett of the Harvard School of Public Health. While the research is good news for older women, it does not dispel worries that younger women who took the pill throughout their teens and early 20s may have an increased risk of this common form of cancer. The study of 118,273 women is the largest of several released this year that have provided conflicting evidence about the possible role of birth control pills in triggering breast cancer. Some experts worry that taking the pill during the early reproduc tive years may somehow increase the risk. Others note that the amount and ratio of sex hormones in birth control pills have changed since their introduction in the early 1960s, and this also might have made the pill more hazardous. “The epidemiologists are all con fused, myself included,” said Dr. Samuel Shapiro of Boston Universi ty’s Sloan Epidemiology Unit, a co author of one of the recent studies. Shapiro found in studying pill us ers under 45 that of those who took oral contraceptives for 10 years or more, the risk of breast cancer was increased four times. A study from University Hospital in Lund, Sweden, found that women who took the pill while teen-agers in the 1960s have about five times the usual risk of breast cancer before they reach menopause. An Oxford University study women under age 35 who had been early pill users found a 74 perceni increase in the breast cancer risk af ter eight years. “Our study does not directly con tradict those studies,” Willett said “It raises an element of doubt aboui them, but there is no strong refuta tion, because it’s possible that the (pill’s) effects really are different in very young women.” Meteorology (Continued from page 3) partment,” he said. Steven Rinard, marine program manager for the southern region of the NWS, said that A&M demon strated interest in the research insti tute. “A&M has always been active in applied meteorological research,” Rinard said. “We’ve been working with Dr. Scoggins.” Scoggins said he believes that the institute’s research will be practical and beneficial, both to A&M and the NWS. “(The research will) apply funda mental knowledge to the solution of problems,” Scoggins said. Rinard, who is a 1964 graduate of A&M, also stressed the function of the institute in increasing interaction between the University and the fed eral government. “Many times there is quite a dis tance between academia and opera tions,” Rinard said. “The difference is applied research.” Rinard said the research per formed at CIAMS will be operatio nal and applicable to immediate situ ations as opposed to hard, strictly theoretical research. Rinard said the NWS defined sev eral areas that it felt needed re search. A&M will supply that re search, he said. Scoggins said that A&M was n< competing with another university for the institute, but establishingtb institute at A&M was not easy. “It takes a lot of groundwork,"b said. “First of all, a university mu) establish need, then prove that it hi the needed expertise to conduct thf appropriate research.” CIAMS will benefit Texas, as tve: as Texas A&M, Scoggins said. “It will benefit Texas through proved weather forecasting,” b said. “It will provide a first-rateedu rational opportunity for our stu dents.” The institute also will provide re search opportunitie A&M faculty, he said. les For Texi wVWWVWVSA .YESTERDAYS Daily Drink & Luiieli Specials Billiards • Darts • Slmffleboard Near Luby’s / House dress code 846-2625
