Thursday, August 31,1989 The Battalion Page 9 ominica pays tribute ^to France with stamp »S \ 1 (AP) — The Commonwealth of Dominica, a mountainous island of the Windward chain in the Carib- Ibean, joins the ranks of the many na tions paying philatelic tribute to the bicentennial of the French Revolu tion. ■ In these stamps, Dominica proves [ that former ties to another country He hard to erase. The island was first settled by the French in 1732. It was later captured by the British be- fpre being regained by the French. [The British, however, recaptured ; Dominica in 1783 and remained in [[Control until 1978, when Dominica 'gamed its independence. I Despite over 200 years of contin- puous British rule, French influence is still evident. Many of the rural in- < habitants continue to speak in a French dialect. The tribute to the bicentennial and to PHILEXFRANCE ’89, the French international stamp show, is evident in four new stamps and a souvenir sheet that focus attention on the historical contributions of the French. The 10-cent depicts a map of Do minica, featuring the names of towns that have French associations and which appeared on a map of the island in 1720. The 35-cent shows a French coin dated 1688 that was used by the French plantation own ers of the period. The $1 bears a French ship that traveled to Dominica and to other French Caribbean colonies in 1720. The $4 illustrates the coffee plant, which the French introduced into Dominica in 1772. Commando (Continued from page 8) Burns, Barbara Mandrell, Manhat tan Transfer and Little River Band. In 1988 and 1989, he was nomi nated for Campus Entertainer of the Year and Campus Artist of the Year. Mason’s claim to fame is an act that blends the arts of stand up com edy, ventriloquism and music. After graduating from the Uni versity of Illinois, he moved to Chi cago and joined the famous Second City Theatre as a musical director of the touring company. It was there that he began working on his own comedy material, writing material for Second City at the same time. Mason has performed with Judy Collins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Robert Klein and Tina Turner. He also has been a guest on “Robert Klein Time” on the USA Cable Network. An other noted appearance was his per formance at MTV’s 1986 Video Awards. An original song parody by Ma son entitled “Psycho Santa” received wide airplay on FM radio stations across the nation. Tickets for the Comedy Comman dos are $2.50 (general admission) and can be purchased at the MSC Box Office. The Commando show will be over by approximately 10:30 p.m. — leav ing plenty of time for those attend ing to recover and attend yell prac tice for the LSU game. Concert (Continued from page 8) Bruford, on drums, was the back bone of the entire show. He dis played a variety of complex rhythms and changed tempo with ease, using every part of his drum kit. Anderson’s voice remained strong and on key throughout the show. He sang high notes that often equaled any of his studio efforts. After one encore, ABWH ended the concert with “Starship Trooper.” The song started out slowly, almost hynotic, and built up a musical ten sion that was relieved by an intense guitar solo by Steve Howe. Although not always Yes, this was Yes on stage. The members of ABWH only played on two Yes al bums together, “Fragile” and “Close To The Edge.” Yes was originally founded by Anderson, Bruford and Squire. Anderson remained with Yes until 1980 and rejoined the group to make the albums 90125 and Big Generator. Wakeman was with Yes from 1971 to 1974, and again from 1976 to 1979. Steve Howe joined Yes in 1970 and stayed with the band un til 1981. Bruford left the band in 1972. ABWH represents the Yes of the 70s and seems prepared to take this same musical style into the 90s.
