Moldavian leaders, reportedly at the urging of Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev, were leaning toward adopting the compromise to try to stop strikes by Rus sians and other groups opposed to tne pending lan guage law. Non-Moldavians are reported to be on strike at 200 businesses and industries in the tiny southern republic bordering Romania. The official Tass news agency said rail workers in several cities Wednesday joined the walkouts. The initial proposal would make only Moldavian the official language of the republic. The compromise plan would make Moldavian the language of government of ficials and documents, and Russian would be the lan guage for everyday contacts between the republic’s eth nic groups. Moldavia’s Communist Party chief, Semen Grossu, suggested the compromise Wednesday to the republic’s Supreme Soviet legislature after speaking with Gorba chev on the telephone, Tass said. Grossu did not say whether Gorbachev gested the compromise although that is widelybd to be the case, said Vasily Nestase of the pro-Mol People’s Front, speaking by telephone from the lie’s capital, Kishinev. Moldavia now has no law specifying which br, is to be used, but Russian traditionally has b tongue for government affairs and it iscommonlv in commerce, which upsets native Moldavians The compromise would cut a part of the i would have made Moldavian the language ofcoi nication among Russians, Ukrainians, Jews,Bulp and other ethnic groups in the republic. The initial law goes farther than the language!; a number of other republics. The Mis sion will help those who can demon strate acute need (including stu dents), but does not give money. “Other agencies are better at giv ing money than we are, so we gener ally provide material items to those who would otherwise fall between the cracks,” Thomas said. Unlike most missions, however, Twin City strongly encourages the aid recipients to help out as store volunteers and repair persons. “Even though our temporary shelter facilities are not that nice, they are luxuries to many, and in re turn we require their help,” Thomas said. “No one comes to play and freeloaders are the exception.” The money from the seal chance stores in 1988 enableti Twin City Mission to provideil sients and residents with til jiencan (ay the a hi and tl |fael Pali Long-su (kingthi Ise new I meals, 13,410 nights of lodging if winning mgr 572 emergency food baskets.
