Evert to retire after Open
Pokes release veteran Rohrer
NEW YORK (AP) — Chris Evert,
who burst onto the tennis scene at
the U.S. Open in 1971 when she
reached the semifinals as a 16-year-
old, says she will retire from serious
competition after this year’s Open.
“No more ‘maybes ' No more
’probablys * . . My mind is made up.
The 1966 U.S. Open will be my final
tournament,’’ Evert wrote in the
Aug. 28 issue of Sports Illustrated.
Evert. 34, will still represent the
United States in the Federation Cup
in Tokyo in October. She and Mar
tina Navratilova will play exhibition
matches this fall and winter, and she
may make a cameo appearance at a
tournament in Boca Raton. Fla .

"But as for Chris Evert, serious
competitor, yes. I guess I really am
outta here," she wrote
"I don't feel the same intensity. . .
I know I’ve lost some confidence,
and I just don’t want to pay the price
any roore."
A native of Fort Lauderdale. Fla ,
Evert has won more matches and
more tournaments than any other
player, male or female. She has won
the U.S Open six times, Wimbledon
three times, the Australian Open
twice and the French Open a record
seven times.
For 13 consecutive years. 1974-66,
she won at least one Grand Slam
tournament And she holds the best
record on day of any player for any
single surface with a 125-match win
streak set from August 1973 to Mav

THOUSAND OAKS. (AP) — Jeff
Rohrer. a seven-year veteran line-
barker. was among seven players re
leased Tuesday by the Dallas Cow
boys. the dub announced.
Rohrer a second-round draft
choice frixn Yale in 1962. was at
tempting to come back from back
surfQerv last summer that forced him
to miss all of the 1968 season. He be
came a starter in 1965. and started
all 28 games in 1966 and 1967
He was listed as the No. 2 left out
side linebacker on the latest Cow
boys’ depth chart, but only because
Garry Cobb has been sidelined with
a knee injury. Rohrer recovered a
fumble but had no tackles Saturday
in a 27-20 victory over the Los An
geles Raiders
Rohrer said he was thankful that
(Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson had
released him early in camp, giving
him the opportunity to catch on with
another team. He added that he had
approached Johnson as early as last
May about a trade, saying he didn't
believe he fit into the team's new de
fensive scheme
Everett Gay. a second-year wide
lecetvcr from Texas, was also re
leased. Gav caught 15 passes for 206
yards and one touchdown last sea
son.
Five free agents also were re
leased: punter Shaun Burdick of
Cincinnati, wide Stacy Hairston of
Ohio Northern; running back
Shawn Daniels of Bowling Green.
