Cardinals 3, Padres 2 SAN DIEGO — St. Louis swept a four-game series on the road for the first time in nearly seven years, beating San Diego 3-2 behind the hitting of Willie McGee and Milt Thompson. Jose Oquendo, who struck out twice against loser Bruce Hurst, doubled in the fifth inning to extend his major-league-leading hitting streak to 21 games. Johnson, 3-4, gave up five hits and walked three in his second complete game. Key, 7-11, had won all seven of his previous decisions against Seattle, but wound up losing his fifth consecutive game. Angels 5, Tigers 4 ANAHEIM, Calif. — Wally Joyner was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the ninth inning, capping a two-run rally and California again came back to beat Detroit 5-4, the Tigers’ 15th loss in 17 games. The Angels swept the four-game series, win ning each time in their final at-bat. California maintained its lead in the American League West by two percentage points over Oakland. Brewers 4, Twins 1 MILWAUKEE — Greg Brock and Glenn Braggs hit consecutive home runs and Mil waukee homered four times against Frank Viola and beat Minnesota 4-1. Viola, 8-11, had allowed only three home runs in his previous 96 innings. But the Brewers tagged him for nine hits in six innings, including homers by Rob Deer and Robin Yount. Milwaukee won nine of 12 games against the Twins this season and has beaten them in 12 of the last 15 meetings. Indians 17, Royals 5 KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Dion James homered and drove in five runs and Brad Komminsk and Joey Belle each drove home four in Cleveland’s highest-scoring game since 1986 as the Indians routed injury-wracked Kansas City 17-5. Komminsk homered, doubled and has driven in 15 runs in his last 10 games. James went 4-for-5 in a 16-hit attack and the Indians scored their most runs since getting 17 on Sept. 6, 1986. The Indians finished 8-4 against Kansas City, the only team above .500 versus the Royals. Kansas City began the game with just regulars in their normal positions. The Royals’ 33-15 home record is the best in the American League, but they dropped three of four to Cleveland in just their third series loss this year at home. Athletics 3, Orioles 2 OAKLAND, Calif. — Jose Canseco homered for the third straight game and streaking Oak land beat slumping Baltimore 3-2 for a four- game sweep. The Athletics, who began the day in a virtual tie with California for the American League West lead, won their fifth straight game. Baltimore lost its fifth in a row, matching its longest skid of the season, and was swept for the first time this year. The Orioles started the day with a six-game lead over Toronto in the AL East.
