State Rep. John Smithee, R-Am- arillo, also criticized Mattox, and said he would file a bill to restrict the attorney general’s office in matters before the high court. “Our attorney general has very broad and unlimited discretion,” Smithee said. But pro-choice groups immedi ately defended Mattox for joining a legal brief by Massachusetts and six other states supporting the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision before the Su preme Court. The court is consid ering a Missouri case that could re verse, or alter a woman’s right to an abortion. The Texas Abortion Rights Ac tion League issued a news release signed by more than 60 political and religious groups in support of Mat tox’s action. “Most Texans feel that abortion is a private matter for women and their families and should be free Ex-astronaut prepares for Pentagon post HOUSTON (AP) — Veteran shuttle astronaut Frederick “Rick” Hauck, who commanded the first post-Challenger mission, said he feh some vulnerability as Discovery rocketed into space last September. The feelings of anxiety started about six minutes into the jarring ride, long after the powerful sotio- fuel rocket boosters had fallen away, but while a trio of main engines were still blazing. “I remember thinking this is am azing that human beings can put to gether machinery like mis,” recalled Hauck, a veteran of three shuttle missions. “And I remember think ing, I hope this thing holds together. “That had nothing to do with any doubts in my mind, other than the fact that I know nothing is perfect and that we are still vulnerable, not because of anything bad someone does, but because this is a machine made by human beings,” he told the Houston Chronicle. Hauck officially left the National Aeronautics and Space Administra tion Monday for a Pentagon post. The 47-year-old Navy captain and Vietnam-era combat pilot said he will serve as an adviser to the chief of naval operations beginning in May. Hauck and crew mates Richard Covey, Dave Hilmers, George “Pinky” Nelson and Mike Lounge were probably one of the most thor oughly trained crews to fly in space when they lifted off Sept. 29 on their four-day mission. The space agency announced on Jan. 9, 1987, the five men, each with at least one previous flight, would fly the first mission after ChaUenger. At the time, the mission aboard the or- biter Discovery was scheduled for Feb. 18, 1988. But a series of delays, most of them related to the modification and testing of the solid-fuel rocket boost ers whose poor design was blamed for the fatal January 1986 Chal lenger accident, forced the post ponement of the liftoff until Sept. 29. from government interference. “There’s simply nothing contro versial about the state attorney gen eral concurring in support of the law of the land,” the news release said. Price said Mattox, who is consid ering running for governor in 1990, agreed to the legal brief to curry fa vor with the radical special-interest groups that dictate the outcome of Democratic primary elections.” He said “Massachusetts Mattox should consider running for gover nor there and later hand-delivered to Mattox’s office a candidate appli cation form for governor of Massa chusetts. “Since Michael Dukakis is not peeking re-election, the field is wide open,” Price said. Ron Dusek, a spokesman for Mat tox, said the attorney general joined in support of Roe vs. Wade because “this has to do with the people’s 6, to privacy.” Dusek tagged the “radical” Puce. “These Deonle to Price. " 1 hese people are radical than anyone, mote hk • ,- y V uc ’ runnin. around burning clinics and prcJ mg in front of clinics,” he said “Mattox takes a stand on issues Dusek said. “He has never been ac cused of sitting on the fence.” But Price said Mattox has nobusi ness speaking for Texas on such a controversial matter. Producine, letter by Gov. Bill Clements, Price said the majority of Texans opto abortions. In that March 31 letter, Clements said he supported “the right to life position as do a vast majority of Tex- ans.” “Quite clearly, the people of om great state want the abortion issue decided by the Texas Legislature, Clements said.
