Religious officials protest new video by boycotting Pepsi CORPUS CHRISTI (AP) — Cath olic Bishop Rene Gracida urged Ro man Catholics in South Texas not to buy Pepsico Inc. products after he viewed what he called a “sacrile gious” music video by pop star Ma donna, who made a Pepsi commer cial featuring the song “Like a Prayer.” Gracida, bishop of the Corpus Chrisd Diocese, said he made the de cision after seeing on MTV the video for the song featured in the com mercial and after reading an exten sive interview with the singer in the March 19 issue of the New York Times. “I was outraged,” Gracida said. “She’s using Catholic symbolism in what I consider a sacrilegious way. She, like others, is seeking to justify abandoning her former religion by attacking it and making fun of it.” “He should stop watching MTV,” Liz Rosenberg, Madonna’s press Small airplane hits power line, kills 4 passengers HONDO (AP) — Four people were killed early Tuesday when their small airplane struck power lines and crashed during severe weather, authorities said. The names of the victims, three men and a woman, were withheld until relatives could be notified, Me dina County Sheriff Wesley Scott said. The single-engine Cessna crashed about 3 a.m. just off of State High way 173, about 12 miles north of Hondo. The plane was flying to Carrizo Springs, where the aircraft’s pilot lived, said Scott. / The sheriff said the plane stopped in Castroville about 1:30 a.m. and that the pilot decided to continue the trip. But when it was near Hondo the pilot apparently decided to re turn to Castroville. “They were flying low and they hit a power line and crashed a short distance from there,” Scott said. “The wreckage was strewn from west to the east, so it appears they decided to turn around because of the bad weather.” agent, told the Associated Press on Tuesday. The press agent said she had heard of complaints from religious leaders in Italy, but not in the United States, until Tuesday. Pepsi spokesman Jeff Brown said the commercial, which also features the song, was shown once on March 2 and will not be shown again. Brown said the commercial does not include the imagery that outraged Gracida. “People are making an association between the commercial and the vi deo, which we find very unfortu nate,” Brown said. “But since it is the same performer singing the same song, we understand the confusion.” In the March 24 issue of South Texas Catholic, distributed to more than 40,000 people in 17 counties, Gracida asks Catholics to “refrain from purchasing any of the follow ing Pepsico products during the re mainder of this year of 1989: Frito- Lay products, Pepsi-Cola beverages, Slice soft drinks, Ruffles chips, Pizza Hut restaurants, Taco Bell restau rants and Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants.” Gracida, however, said it is not a boycott and that he knew of no other bishops or parishes that have stopped buying Pepsi products. The Mississippi-based American Family Association also has criticized the video. Gracida and the Rev. Don Wild- mon, executive director of the Mis sissippi organization, said the fact the commercial will not be shown again does not stop their outrage. “I think it’s wrong to use Ma donna in their campaign to reach young people, given her history, atti tude and predilection for mocking her former religion,” Gracida told the Corpus Chrisd Caller-Times. Wildmon said his organization sent letters to “about 3,000 Christian leaders of all denominations” de scribing the video and urging them to boycott Pepsi products for the rest of 1989 or until the company cancels the singer’s contract. Pepsi-Cola has signed the singer — who drapes herself in crucifixes — to a $5 million contract to be a spokeswoman for the soft drink through commercials and on her up coming “Like a Prayer” tour. Rosenberg, a vice president with Warner Bros. Records in New York, said the company does not censor its artists. 4.
