The Aggies are enjoying a 29-1 start and lead both national poll's for the fourth consecutive week. This week marks the fifth straight week A&M has led the F.SPN/Collegiate Baseball rankings. State Supreme Court Justice Car men Ciparick said San Diego “vio lated the spirit” of the race by using 60-foot catamaran to defend against the Mercury Bay Boating Club’s single-hulled yacht, which is about 90 feet at the water line. San Diego’s catamaran is the ‘Stars and Stripes,” a multi-hulled boat that is lighter, faster and more maneuverable than the “New Zea land.” Skippered by Dennis Conner, the San Diego crew sailed to easy victory over the Mercury Bay club in waters off San Diego last September. Calling the contest a “gross mis match,” the judge ordered the 138- year-old silver cup turned over to the New Zealanders. The leader of the New Zealand syndicate, Michael Fdy, 1 expressed no such surprise. “It had to come sooner or later,” he said from Wellington, New Zea land. “We were always strong in our belief in what the Cup meant and I think the Cup has come through.” Fay said the America’s Cup itself was the real winner and the ruling would be good for the integrity of the event. In her 14-page decision, the judge said: “The court is mindful that for feiture is a drastic remedy in the in stance of a competition such as the America’s Cup, with its large eco nomic significance and prestige. “Nonetheless, the parties neither seek or suggest any alternative relief upon the disqualification of a com petitor, nor is any alternative relief feasible under the circumstances.” The judge said the 101-year-old Deed of Gift which governs the race does not specify the size a boat must be or the number of hulls it must have. But, she said, “the conclusion is inescapable” that George Schuyler, who established the race, “contem plated the defending vessel to relate in some way to the specifications of the challenger.” Therefore, Ciparick said, “it is clear that a catamaran may not de fend an America’s Cup competition against a monohull.” Kingdome gets new facilities for Final Four SEATTLE (AP) — The Michigan Wolverines will have a homecourt advantage for the NCAA’s Final Four in the Kingdome, starting Sat urday. The floor, 6,720 square feet of hardwood maple, was made in Dol lar Bay, Mich., by Horner Floor Co. “We painted the lane blue, be cause Michigan’s going to win,” Bill Gappy, company director of porta ble sales, said. Actually, the court colors, graph ics and other details are all deter mined by the NCAA for an event that will draw more than 40,000 fans, officials and media to the King- dome for semifinal games Saturday and another 40,000 for the championship Monday night. The domed stadium, which turned 13 years old Monday, was getting ready for the big event. In addition to the never-before- played-on floor, the Kingdome crowd will be able to watch a brand- new, $450,000 scoreboard that uses a light matrix allowing the operator to display npt only game statistics but also moving graphics, such as a can non shooting a ball through a bas ketball net. Frey’s personnel goofs assure Cubs will have typical season Major League Baseball begins its season April 3 and the boys of summer will start their annual race for the World Series. However, for fans of some teams the season will be another long, frustrating 162-game torture. The Chi cago Cubs are one team that looks to keep its fans suf fering. In 1984, the long-suffering Cub fans saw their team come within one game of the World Series, and par adise, for the first time since 1945. No team has gone longer without a trip to the Series than the Cubs. Since 1984, the Cubs have gone backwards and gen eral manager Jim Frey seems more intent on destroying his dub than building it into a contender. Last year Frey traded All-Star reliever Lee Smith to Boston for Calvin Schiraldi and A1 Nipper. Frey evi dently didn’t think the Cubs needed an ace stopper in the bullpen. Smith saved 29 games for the Red Sox and the Sox won the American League East. The Cubs titching staff saved 29 games and finished fifth in the National League East. This winter, Frey went shopping for a stopper at the winter baseball meeting, and came away with a lemon. Frey traded outfielder Rafael Palmeiro (and others) for Texas Ranger relief pitcher Mitch Williams. Palmeiro finished second in the league in batting last year. This fact alone makes up for the fact that not one This 53 RBIs was a game winner. Then again, it is hard to get game-winning RBIs batting first. Williams does have a few good points, like 61 strike outs in 68 innings and only 48 hits. However, he did walk 47 batters. He has trouble controlling his fastball and catcher Damon Berryhill should have lots of fun trying to keep track of it. Stan Golaboff Sports Writer Frey also traded away veteran catcher Jody Davis in the middle of last season because he thinks Berryhill is the catcher the Cubs need. With Davis gone, the Cubs only real power will be Andre Dawson and it is not certain how much longer his 35 year-old legs will hold out. After Dawson, the Cubs have a group of young hitters, led by Ryne Sand berg, who may one day be as awesome as the Mets start ing lineup, but it will take a few years before that hap pens. The Cubs pitching staff, while not the worst in the league, is young. After Rick Sutcliffe, the Cubs have no one with more than three years of experience in their starting rotation. In fact, Sutcliffe has more career wins than the rest of the starting staff combined. If spring training (the Cubs are 6-17, the worst re cord in baseball) is an indication as to the Cubs fortunes for 1989, the “lovable losers” will continue to keep their fans in agony. However, as a loyal Cubs fan, I can safely say that no. matter how they do on the field, the Cubs will always have the support of their fans. r( ^\ CSAl io rents- ' -ontact ^ ns re- y betht »advi- S S e onh c ,vithJ ^ • jveriv ^ iysteffl ; lie ad- V govet- r- ^n- \ hav« n Foard “ TAMU PRE-LAW Fieldtrip to Baylor Law School Meet at 8a.m. in front of Rudder Friday, March 31 For more information call Matt Spahn 776-0428 2ZZ2222ZZZ22Z222222ZZZ22ZZZ2Z222& gies hit home runs. A&M had 13 homers for the weekend with Mike Easley and Terry Taylor clubbing three apiece. A&M pitchers limited Tech to just seven runs in the series while posting an excellent earned run average of 1.80 against the Red Raiders. A&M resumes SWC play this weekend with a three-game set against Baylor at Olsen Field.
