A&M beat McNeese State Univer sity 6-0 Friday and fell to the Univer sity of South Carolina 11-1 Saturday to give the Lady Aggies an 8-3 sea son record. The tournament was ended about 5 p.m. Saturday due to cold, wet weather. Each of the seven teams were scheduled to play six games. The Lady Aggies wasted no time getting a lead against McNeese State. After holding the Cowgirls scoreless in the first inning, A&M worked Aggie Softball • Scores:A&M 6, McNeese State 0; South Carolina 11, A&M 1. • Record:8-3. • Ranking: Ninth. • Next game:Thursday vs. Loui siana Tech. MSU pitcher Dawn Korbak for three runs in the bottom half of the first. Shortstop Renee Blaha led off with a bunt single for the Lady Ag gies and ran to second on a passed ball. Tory Parks and Stephanie Schulte drew walks to load the bases. Korbak walked Carrie Heightley to score Blaha and reload the bases. Erin Newkirk reached first on a fielder’s choice with Parks getting forced out at home plate. Catcher Erika Eriksson lined a single to cen ter field to score Schulte and Height- ley and give A&M a 3-0 lead. The Lady Aggies kept the Cow girls from scoring behind the pitch ing of Dana Mitchell. In the bottom half of the third in ning, Parks came to bat with the bases loaded and knocked in New kirk with an infield grounder to give the Lady Ags a 4-0 advantage. Mitchell and the rest of the A&M defense got out of a bind in the Cow girls’ half of the fifth inning. Stepha nie Rougeau led off McNeese with a single and Caroline Shannon fol lowed with a walk. Terri Wiggins hit a single to short- right field to load the bases with no outs. But Mitchell got three straight Cowgirls to force a teammate out at home to end the threat. Parks led the team off in the sixth with a sharply hit single to left-cen ter field and went to second on a sin gle by left fielder Stacey Crainer. Both runners advanced on a sacri fice grounder by Schulte. Heightley laced a double to left field to score Parks and Crainer and A&M was up 6-0. The win boosted Mitchell’s season record to 8-2. A&M Head Coach Bob Brock said his team played well against the Cowgirls. “I thought we did an excellent job against McNeese State,” Brock said. “Dana did a great job of pitching.” A hard hitting South Carolina team, high winds and below-freezing temperatures combined to give A&M a miserable 11-1 loss in the Lady Aggies’ second game. Brock said the weather played a big part in the loss. “I think we just succumbed to the weather,” Brock said. “I think our inexperience showed. We had a freshman pitcher pitching under some extreme conditions.” The game was scoreless through four innings before the Lady Game cocks belted the Lady Ags for eight runs in the top of the fifth. The inning started well for Mitch ell, pitching again for A&M, as she got USC’s Andrea Beall to ground out. But six more batters came to the plate before A&M got the second out. Kathy Matthew doubled off the fence in left field and Robin Dutton walked. Tricia Popowski drove in Matthew with a single to give the Lady Gamecocks a 1-0 lead. Stacy Agee loaded the bases with a single and Marianne DiRupo reached first base on an error by the A&M third-baseman. Dutton and Popowski scored on the play to make it 3-Q USC i : Michelle Delloso singled ,to right field to load the bases again. Kelly Grotheer walked to score Agee and Kris Kordowny singled to score Di Rupo and Delloso and give the Lady Gamecocks a 6-0 lead. Matthew got her second hit of the inning, a single, to drive home Gro theer and Kordowny and finish the eight-run inning. The Lady Aggies tried to bounce back in the bottom of the fifth. New kirk reached first base on a fielder’s choice and Barbara Kajs hit a two- out single to left field. Blaha singled to center field to load the bases and it looked like the Lady Aggies were going to rally. South Carolina pitcher Angie Lear threw a wild pitch and Newkirk scored to make it 8-1 USC. But Parks grounded out to a flawless Lady Gamecock infield to end the inning and A&M’s scoring. The Lady Aggies play Lousiana Tech at 6 p.m. Thursday before hosting the Aggie Invitational II this weekend. Aggie men swimmers take third at SWC meet FROM STAFF & WIRE REPORTS The Texas A&M men’s swimming team stroked to third place at the Southwest Conference Champion ships over the weekend in Austin. A&M Assistant Coach Jay Holmes said they finished where they thought they should. “We knew going in that we could get third,” Holmes said. A&M scored 455 points over the three day meet to finish behind Texas’ 912 points and SMU’s 762. The Aggies placed ahead of Arkan sas’ 400 points, TCU’s 399 and Rice’s 101. Leading performances were turned in by many swimmers in the meef. A&M Freshman Don Boyd set two school records in the breasts- trokes. He clocked a 56.39 for the 100- yard breast to place ninth and 2:01.05 in the 200-yard race to nab second place. His time in the 200-yard event qualified him for the NCAA championship meet later this month. Junior Mike Varozza sped to sec ond place in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 48.49 seconds. Varozza also placed 10th in the 50-yard free style in 20.69 seconds. Holmes singled out the efforts of sophomore Neil Kallmeyer. “Neil really did the job for us,” Holmes said. “He didn’t get to swim his best events because we needed him in other events.” Kallmeyer placed fourteenth in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:04.37 and thirteenth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.14 seconds. A real bonus for the Aggies was qualifying two relays for the NCAA championships. The 400-yard med ley quartet of Peter Staruch, Boyd, Varozza and Aaron McDonough posted a time of 3:19.84 to place fourth and get the NCAA cut. Likewise, the team of Varozza, McDonough, Matt Cerizo and Ed Altman cruised to a 2:59.12 in the 400-yard freestyle relay. That NCAA qualifying time was high lighted by Varozza’s split of 44.04 seconds, the fastest in school history.
