Through the efforts of researchers in the College of Vet erinary Medicine at Texas A&M, however, these numbers may be re duced. Robert Bughardt, associate pro fessor of veterinary medicine-anat omy, is conducting experiments on animals, the majority of which are rodents, to determine the factors causing these premature births and the measures needed to prevent them. By gaining a clearer understand ing of the anatomical factors asso ciated with labor, researchers may be able to develop safe and effective measures to regulate the labor proc ess in humans, he said. Burghardt said one factor causing premature labor is the abnormally early formation of channels in the smooth muscle cells of the uterus. These channels, which are synthe sized by the stimulation of the hor mone estrogen, transmit signals be tween cells that regulate the contractions in the labor process. Levels of the hormone progeste rone, which inhibit the formation of these channels, may be reduced pre maturely, causing the channels to form. By injecting animals pregnant : with synthetic hormones, which cause the depletion of progesterone levels, researchers have induced the early onset of labor in the animals, Burghardt said. Likewise, by inject ing animals with synthetic hormones that bind progesterone receptors, preventing the depletion of proges terone levels, labor is delayed. “We’re manipulating the system to generate a physiological respon se,” he said. Although researchers have been able to regulate the labor process in animals, there is no established evi dence that progesterone alone inhib its premature channel formation in humans, Burghardt said. The appli cation of this research to humans may not be available for several years, he said. Medical doctors use compounds called betagonists to delay prema ture labor contractions, in humans. However, the compound delays birth for only about two weeks, he said. What’s Up Friday CAMPUS CRUSADE FOR CHRIST: will have Friday Night Alive at 7:30pj 108 Harrington.
