Hogs can take big lead with win over Aggies SATURDAY PATIO FURNITURE 10-1 TOP 40 1521 Texas Ave. • Culpepper Plaza • College Station, TX DALLAS (AP) — If the Arkansas Razorbacks can defeat the Texas Ag gies in College Station on Saturday afternoon, then you can all but hand the regular season trophy to coach Nolan Richardson’s talented team. Arkansas’ 81-68 victory over Southern Methodist coupled with Houston’s upset victory over Texas on Wednesday night all but put the Hogs in SWC championship heaven. Arkansas is 10-2 while second- place Texas is 9-3. However, the Hogs actually hold a two-game lead over the Longhorns because they’ve beaten them twice. By virtue of the double victories over Texas, the Razorbacks would earn the top seed in the post-season tournament in Dallas. “We can’t let down now,” Richard son said after the victory. “We’re close but we can’t let down.” Richardson is still wary because four of the Razorbacks’ five losses this year have been on the road. If Arkansas beats the Aggies, they would only have one tough game left and that would be against Houston at home. Arkansas hosts Baylor on Wednesday night, Feb. 22, and takes a respite from the conference wars with a non-conference game against Tulsa on Feb. 25. Then Arkansas is at Rice on Wednesday, March 1, and finishes out the season in Barnhill Arena in Fayetteville March 5 against Hous ton in a 1 p.m. regionally televised (Raycom) game. “We can’t think about what’s ahead,” Richardson said. “We’ve got to concentrate on A&M. Shelbv Met calf has them coming on strong, par ticularly at home.” Arkansas’ tough fullcourt press rattled SMU into 16 turnovers on Wednesday night. “They just get on top of you and don’t let up,” said SMU coach John Shumate. FORI WORTH (AP) — The Ar kansas Razorbacks seek a record ninth consecutive indoor Southwest Conference track championship be ginning, today and there doesn’t ap pear anybody around who can stop them. While the Razorbacks have domi nated the men’s competition for al most a decade, the Lady Longhorns of Texas are favored to repeat as champions again in their division. Arkansas coach John McDonnell said the Hogs will be tough as always in the distance runs. “Our bread and butter is in the distance races,” McDonnell said. “That’s where we are the strongest.” Baylor coach Clyde Hart said Ar kansas isn’t as strong as usual. “They just aren’t as tough across the board as they have been,” Flart said. McDonnell admitted “we don’t have anyone in the hurdles." Arkansas’ top competitor is Falcon, the NCAA champion in mile and 3,000 run. For the Lady Longhorns,Carl Guidry is a triple threat in tilt 200, and triple jump. Another spotlight performtf Olympian and NCAA Raymond Stewart of Texas Ci tian in the 55 dash. The only returning men'stl pions tire Falcon in the 3000, Lorenzon Brown of Arl in the 800, Devon Dixon Tech in the triple jump, t Burrell of Houston in the jump. The meet begins at 4 p.m. with finals and prelims and wrapii around 9 p.m. The meet resumes at noonon! urday and runs until about 7p,i T arrant County Convention Can Ten people, htudents, were jfederal grand ji ■of racketeering jtrafficking.
