Page 4 The Battalion 1,000 refugees line up at INS to file for asylum BAYVIEW (AP) — More than 1,000 Central Americans formed a half-mile-long line Wednesday out side a rural Immigration and Natu ralization Service detention center where the INS moved a political asy lum processing office in southern Texas. Hundreds camped out overnight in a plowed field near the minimum- security Port Isabel Service Proc essing Center for early places in line. Several hundred more showed up by mid-morning. It was their first chance to file for political asylum since the INS tem porarily was evicted Friday from its Harlingen asylum-processing office because of alleged health and fire code violations. “This tremendous line here rep resents a large number of Central Americans flooding into the Rio Grande Valley, and we just can’t continue like this,” Omer G. Sewell, INS district director in Harlingen, said while walking the line of immi grants Wednesday morning in east ern Cameron County. “I’m fleeing from military serv ice,” Henry Torres, a 27-year-old Nicaraguan, said as he waited in line after camping overnight near the 347-acre federal facility. “A commu nist country is no good.” Douglas Herrera, a 24-year-old El Salvadoran, said he had no fear of entering the double-fenced immi gration prison where 411 aliens were under detention awaiting deporta tion proceedings, because “they (INS) promised to help us.” The detention center is near the unincorporated community of Bay- view, just south of the Laguna Atas cosa National Wildlife Refuge and 15 miles northeast of the border city of Brownsville. Taxis, vans and cars carried many of the immigrants to the rural cen ter. Border Patrol agents at nearby ru ral intersections stopped various ve hicles en route to the new asylum center. Inside the center, processing of the applicants appeared to be flow ing smoothly as groups of 50 were bused past the security checkpoint and seated under a green U.S. Army tent where they waited to see adjudi cators.
