Vailin TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF YOUR VEHICLE'" Department gets contract for engineering program By Alan Sembera SENIOR STAFF WRITER Texas A&M’s industrial engineering department will begin offering master’s degrees in logistics and engi neering this summer to civilian U.S. Army employees. The school is being created by a $4.8 million grant from the Army, Dr. Joseph W. Foster, director of the project, said. About 130 Army employees are expected to enter the program each year. The employees who enter the program will be engi neering graduates from around the country who have completed a year of study at the Army’s school of logis tics and engineering in Texarkana. Although the new courses created by the program will be available to other students, Foster said, the courses will be accelerated and other students probably will not want to take them. The courses are accelerated, he said, because the Army employees are being paid full-time salaries and can spend more: time on school work because they have no other responsibilite§, pnlike most graduate students. The five areas the new school will focus on are main tainability engineering, production engineering, quality and reliability engineering, safety engineering, and test and evaluation engineering. After obtaining a master’s degree from A&M,ll employees will enter the Army Material Commai* Foster said. There they will he assigned to a “comm« ity command” to provide technical assistance in proa ring materials for the Army and other armed forces Different commodity commands provide spec materials. The commands include the missile cot maud, the tank-automotive command and the electro: ics command, he said. None of the courses created at A&M will be ah particularly at weapon systems procurement, Fos« said. They will he typical of courses already offeredi A&M. “Whether you’re studying maintainability to work an automobile or whether you’re studying it to work a tank — it’s still maintainability,” he said. The $4.8 million contract between A&M and ik Army will last Five years, and 650 students areexpeci; to graduate from the program during that period. A&M competed with about 30 other universities win the contract, Foster said. The program will c tinue after Five years if the Army provides more fiirc he said. To receive their degrees, the Army engineers n fulfill the same requirements as other students. The industrial engineering department currendyki 150 students in its graduate program — 75 mastc: candidates and 75 doctoral candidates. A&M assists Saudi university with research, training effort By Sharon Maberry STAFF WRITER Texas A&M is providing technical assistance to a Saudi Arabian univer sity as part of a collaborative project between the United States and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. “Our main objective is to enhance the Saudi institution’s capabilities in teaching and research,” said Dwayne Suter, associate dean of A&M’s Col lege of Agriculture. A&M, along with Purdue Univer sity, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and North Car olina State University, has been working to improve the teaching and research facilities of King Abdu- laziz University (KAU). A consortium of U.S. universities was formed in 1986 to aid KAU’s Faculty of Meteorology, Environ ment and Arid Land Agriculture (FMEA) in its teaching and research programs. Suter, who is the project manager for the three-year program, said the goals of the project are: • To assist the FMEA faculty in the advancement of meteorology, environmental sciences and arid land agriculture in the Western Providence (where KAU is located). • To establish linkages for collab oration in education and research with leading universities in the United States. • To design and construct a world-class controlled environment research facility to assist the FMEA faculty in its research programs. Suter returned Jan. 26 from KAU’s Agricultural Research Sta tion in Saudi Arabia, where he over saw the installation of equipment for research to increase the efficiency of water irrigation systems in the West ern Providence. “Saudi Arabia has an extensive. underground water supply, but it is being rapidly depleted in certain re gions in the Kingdom,” Suter said. “I oversaw the installation of two lysim- eters in which large boxes of soil are placed on weighing scales that are monitored with an electronic data acquisition system.” The lysimeter’s purpose is to eval uate evapo-transpiration rates of plants that are planted in the lysime- ter box, Suter said. “Our research scientists in Tcxi have been leaders in the design an utilization of these weighing lysim ters,” he said. Another major aspect ofthepJ ject is a Phytotron facility, in wtel the environment can be accuraiii controlled and monitored in J rious-sized plant growth chambenl Suter said. “At A&M, we have a numberl growth chambers dispersfl throughout the campus,” hesaid l Phytotron provides for centralml tion of various environmentally-coi trolled growth chambers.” The program also includes ii| placement of Saudi Arabian m uate students at various U.S. univfll sities to provide quality faculty 6| FMEA, Suter said. A&M is edit ing Saudi graduate students in ik areas of meteorology and arid lasf agriculture. Suter said computerization is;| other facet of the Saudi Arabia project.
