I Bellard’s bunch was special to me, [id I had turned down an opportu- Bty to teach high school in Australia Bcause they wouldn’t fly me to Col- Bge Station each weekend. (Hey, I ifas young and crazy.) B In fact, the very next game, a 28-7 Bin over Texas Tech here, had in it favorite defensive play involving defensive back Pat Thomas. I have been fortunate enough to have lone a magazine article on that prae — and a story in this paper on e Washington game. Nothing has prevented me from eing the Aggies play football for e past 14-plus years. There have been times when I was ill or couldn’t really afford it or whatever else; still (saw the guys play. I As I write these words, I still find I almost unbelievable that I am a lexas A&M student and have talked i) so many of my guys, i Dennis Goehring is a businessman here in College Station, but when I [heeded to talk to him about the 1955 §CU game, he graciously arranged for me to get a personal interview (still don’t know about having your liirttail out in that game, Dennis). | I won’t go into great detail about all the others; just some names like Jack Pardee, Garth TenNapel, Da- yid Hardy, jimmy Hawkins, Tony Franklin, Darrell Smith, Don Jones, Pugh McElroy, Jerry Honore, Bubba Bean and Mike Mosley. E My Mosley story concerned A&M’s 23-20 win over Mississippi at Jackson, Miss., in 1980, when he was the last Aggie quarterback to rush for 100 yards. The story ran the fiveek A&M returned to Jackson for the first time since 1980 and the op ponent was Southern Mississippi. Already special to me (it was my 150th consecutive game to see in person), it became veryspecial when nknown freshman QB Bucky Rich- dson ran 82 yards for a touch- down and a total of 102 yards, the first A&M QB since Mosley to do so. 1 Hardy and I have been pretty good friends for years, but the rea son I wrote two stories about him was because he has never gotten the acclaim due him for his outstanding career as a place kicker. He set a bowl record with 15 kick ing points in A&M’s 33-16 win over Oklahoma State in the 1981 Inde pendence Bowl (which is still a re cord, though it has been tied once). Hardy also kicked two field goals in A&M’s unlikely 13-7 win over Texas at Kyle Field in 1979, among other notable achievements. The one game I haven’t done — and won’t do — is Alabama, though I had turned down an opportunity to teach high school in Australia because they wouldn’t fly me to College Sta tion each weekend I certainly did have a player in mind. I will miss that story as my way of protesting the humiliation brought upon Texas A&M and its football program by the current head coach, Jackie Sherrill. Ironically the man I wanted to re place former Aggie Coach Tom Wil son, Sherrill has brought great victo ries and much dirt to the football team I have loved all of my life. It was bad enough that A&M President William Mobley had to bail us out of harsh NCAA sanctions back this past September by prom ising that he would oversee a clean program from here on out. The NCAA went ahead and put Sherrill on a personal probation, something that I can’t recall as hav ing been done too often. But, two weeks ago, former player George Smith came out in a newspa per article in The Dallas Morning News accusing Sherrill of paying him hush money to keep him quiet about recruiting violations that oc curred between 1982-83. Initially I had my suspicions as to the authenticity of the charges, even though a reporter supposedly had eight hours of taped conversations with Smith concerning the issue. But after the A&M publicity de partment held the charade of a press conference that Saturday night, in which Mobley read a statement that didn’t apply to the situation and Smith dodged questions for the five minutes he “graciously” allowed the gathered media, I reluctantly came to the conclusion that the charges weretrue. Any A&M student who has taken a public relations course would have seen right through the tactics used then. Anyone of us trying to dupli cate Smith’s effort in a class would have received an F — and deserved it. How can the A&M administration think we are so stupid as to believe such a person as Smith, who did nothing other than paint him — and Sherrill — guilty as charged with his idiotic answers and rude treatment of the media? That made me sick, and I decided not to do my Alabama story because I didn’t want to write anythingcon- cerning Sherrill or one of his play ers. Then, when such A&M lumina ries as the chairman of the Board of The one game I haven’t done —and won’t do — is Alabama. ... I will miss that story as my way of protesting the humiliation brought upon Texas A&M and its football program by the current head coach, Jackie Sherrill. Regents, David Eller, blatantly ac cepts Smith’s change of heart be cause he wants to do so and wants the matter dropped, well, I knew that I had to something to show my total contempt for such actions. I don’t want to be associated with a football program that continually and brazenly disregards rules and regulations, then lies about them with methods that some third-world countries would be embarrassed to try. Many of the youngsters (I’m 39 years old) who work for The Battal ion have had to take verbal and writ ten abuse for the way they have han dled this matter. Often, those attacking them say that they don’t like Texas A&M or that they aren’t using proper investigative methods before writing their stories. From what I see and read, I say just the opposite. If anyone in this matter has tried to get the facts be fore jumping to a conclusion, the staff writers have done so. Eller complains that Sherrill isn’t being given the benefit of the doubt before an investigation can be com pleted — then exonerates him after that press conference. Mobley, the man who was going to be the captain of a clean ship, seems to be caught in the middle, but then again, he said that he would be in charge. And he isn’t. A&M graduates, their families and other Aggie fans berate the me dia as being unfair to Sherrill, even though few saw the Smith press con ference or have any other direct way of delving into the matter. I am proud to be associated with these journalism students and look forward to the day when they are working on newspaper staffs around the United States. As for the stench that well-water scum like Smith and Sherrill have brought to the football team I have loved, I just won’t take it any more. Sherrill is the coach, and as long as he is, I am through with this football program. Not because I am angry with Texas A&M or the players them selves, but because I would like to see some integrity here along the way, and Sherrill would need a dic tionary to even recognize the word. And, to anyone who would write or say to me that I don’t love Texas A&M, don’t you tell me that! I have spent a third of a century following this football team and University, and nobody else has sacrificed as much personally to be able to see them play. I did it because I loved to see them play and was proud whenever 1 got to help out in any way. But guys, I’m gone as long as ol’ Jackie is here.
