Audience to decide outcome of ‘Drood’ By Shane Hall MSC-OPAS presents the musical “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” at 8 p.m. tonight in Rudder Auditorium. The Tony Award-winning musical is a play within a play about a troupe of players at an 1870s English music hall who are to present a musical based on Charles Dickens’ unfinished novel, “The Mystery of Edwin Drood. ” Rupert Holmes composed the musical after reading the unfinished Dickens work, and was said to be tantalized by the possibilities of what the answer to this “who dunnit” could be. Holmes wrote many possible solutions to the novel’s unanswered questions into the musical itself. Theater-goers coming to the play are advised to bring their thinking caps because there will be some participation on their part. When the musical is performed on the stage, the audience decides the play’s outcome by voting on the identity of the murderer, the identity of the detective and which lovers are united at the play’s end. The choices given are those that were written into the play by Holmes. The cast must be prepared to perform whichever solution receives the majority of the audience’s vote. Thus, the ending of the play is in the audience’s hands. Holmes’ unique approach to writing a musical paid off in the awards department. “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” won five Tony Awards, including Broadway’s Best Musical. Holmes himself won the Best Book and Best Original Score awards for a musical, the first sole recipient of both awards in Tony Award history. Additionally, Mystery Writers of America presented the Edgar Award for Best Play to the musical. “Drood” also won the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Musical. Tickets to “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” are still on sale at the MSC Box Office. Ticket prices are $22, $17.50 and $14.50 for students, and $25, $22 and 18.50 for non-students.
