At least you can if you’re the new dean of the School of Music at the University of North Texas. Dr. Robert L. Blocker, who was named to the UNT position in May, received his doctor of musical arts degree from the university in 1972 after earning his master’s in music at UNT in 1970. Much has changed since then. The university’s School of Music now is the second largest in the na tion, with internationally recognized programs. And the then-new grad uate has since served as dean of mu sic at Baylor University, dean at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and chairman at Ste phen F. Austin, Brevard College in North Carolina and at Western Texas College. But much remains the same: Blocker’s identification with stu dents and his love of his alma mater. His memories of his graduate stu dent days are vivid and he sees enough of himself in the students here to put himself in their place. “If I were to greet the graduate students with tales of my time here, 1 would be met with the same kind of blind stares, the stare of someone thinking. ‘I’ve got to take a practi- cum test in 30 minutes and this joker is going down memory lane.”’ So, Blocker’s emphasis will be on dreams and plans for the future and a healthy respect for the past. ns lil. He says he would like to help build a program at UNT that would be marked throughout the nation by its artistic and administrative excel lence. He also would like to help build a program that would make an international impact on art and cul ture, something the school already has begun with existing or planned programs in Taiwan and the Peo ple’s Republic of China. Blocker maintains an active sched ule as a concert pianist, choral direc tor, adjudicator and lecturer — a schedule he said he will try not to ne glect.
