Viola pitched five-hit ball over even innnings to shackle the Texas Hangers, 10-1. Td blow up if there was a play in he field or an umpire’s call or some thing else that might happen to af Feet the game,” Viola said of the wav he used to be. ' ‘But I’ve calmed down. I’v e learned that there are certain things I can’t control. It’s my number one job to go out there, throw the ball and not worry about all the other things.” Viola had failed in his two pre vious tries for his 20th but he cruised against Texas behind an offensive explosion that included Kirby Puck ett’s 20th and 21st homers and four RBIs. ‘That makes your job easy,” Viola said. ‘That’s why this is such a team game.” Viola struck out five and walked three, lowering his ERA to 2.36, best in the American League. Twins manager l orn Kelly, who managed the former St. John’s star when Viola broke into pro ball at Or lando, Fla., in 1981, had an explana tion for Viola’s success. ‘He keeps it over the plate,” Kelly said. ‘If you keep it over the plate, you have a chance. ‘You’ve got a kid in the minors, you never know. But he matured, started getting the ball over the plate. When he got to the majors he was throwing 100 pitches in five in nings. He wasn’t putting hitters away. Now he’s got command of his pitches, and he’s putting hitters away.” Pitching coach Dick Such says Vi ola’s success is linked to increased concentration. ‘He’s just more focused, more in tense,” Such said. ‘There are always guys who come along who can throw the baseball. But until you get yourself squared away mentally, things don’t happen. I’ve got to take my hat off to him, the way he’s turned himself around as a pitcher.” Former Twins pitcher and cur rent broadcaster Jim Kaat says Viola is the best he has seen this season. ‘He’s the stopper,” said Kaat. “He’s the guy you want to pitch the big game. You see the consistency, which was lacking five years ago. You saw the talent. You didn’t see where it would lead.” Kaat also has taken note of Viola’s attitude transformation over the last five years. ‘He was very emotional,” Kaat said. ‘He’d get upset when things didn’t go right. Pie’s learned a lot about pitching and this is the result.” Viola was relieved that the 20-win plateau had been reached. ‘I know number 21 will be a lot easier,” he said. While the defending World Champion Twins trail the Oakland A’s by nine games in the American League West with a mojith remain ing in the season, Viola said Minne sota has not conceded the title.
