By Richard Williams City Editor Only one cadet at Texas A&rM has the privilege of sleeping in class without worrying what the professor thinks. That cadet is Reveille V, the first lady of A&M. Reveille is a registered collie and the highest ranking cadet at A&M. She can do anything she wants, in cluding taking over any cadet’s bed she wishes. The displaced cadet must then find another place to sleep. Reveille stays busy on the day of football games. At about 7 a.m., Re veille, the mascot corporal and the freshmen in Company E-2 go to the graves of the previous mascots. The freshmen clean the graves before all of the home games so Reveilles I, II, III can “see” the scoreboard during the games. After that task is finished, A&M’s mascot returns to the dormitory for a bath and a nap. Reveille V marches in with the rest of the cadets before home games. During the game Reveille can be seen jumping, barking and growling at the opposing teams play ers, cheerleaders or mascot. But Reveille V is not as vocal in her dislike of the opposing team as one of the previous mascots. Reveille II was known to express her views of the opposing team and officials by biting them. Reveille II was barred from the football field twice — once for bitting an assistant coach from Texas Christian University. Freshmen in the Corps of Cadets can’t pet Reveille or look at her, but freshmen cadets are in charge of protecting Reveille at football games. After a game is over, a group of freshmen cadets from company E-2 form “the block” around Re veille to ensure she remains safe. The block is formed by interlocking arms to form a square around the mascot, the mascot corporal and his date. The group then escorts Re veille back to the dormitory. Reveille is the only Southwest Conference mascot that has never been stolen. Although Reveilles III, IV and V were and are registered collies, not all A&M mascots have had such high breeding. In 1931, a carload of Aggies re turning from an out-of-town foot ball game hit a black and white dog that suddenly appeared in front of their car. The cadets brought the dog back with them to A&M. The next morning’s wake-up call, reveille, was accompanied by the loud howls of injured dog and so Re veille was named. Reveille soon began attending for mation, leading the band and ap pearing at football games. Soon after she became A&M’s official mascot. ... but others have held job By Richard Williams City Editor Some Aggies think every Texas A&M mascot has been named Re veille, but this is not the case. Be tween Reveille I and II A&M had mascots named Rusty, Freckles and Spot. Reveille I had left huge pawprints for any new mascot to fill. Reveille I was made a general in the Women’s Air Corps and received national publicity in the movie “We’ve Never Been Licked.” To replace Reveille I, a 4-nionth- i black mongrel pup named Rusty was given to A&M. The Bryan Eagle described Rusty in this way: "So this fall look for Rusty out there in front. . . Look for a dapper little pup with her hair freshly combed, a maroon and white ‘T-Ag- gies’ gracing her blanket, and a 220- piece band behind her. Call her by name, pet her — she shows no favor itism and is friendly to all. It is ru mored, however, Rusty is being groomed to ignore people waving pennants of orange and white.” However, Rusty did not work out as mascot and Freckles was soon on the scene. Hal Mullins, ’48, was the Freckles’ owner. Mullins described Freckles debut as the Aggie mascot. “I was in the band, and Freckles lived with me,” Mullins said. “One day we were playing Arkansas and the dog got on the football Field.” Since this was more than Rusty had ever done as mascot, the editors of The Battalion started a movement to draft Freckles as mascot. The Battalion’s editorial board wrote that the “present mascot is bandshy; several attempts have been made to teach Rusty to follow the band. “But at the First note of the Aggie War Hymn, Rusty is nowhere to be found. She confines herself to one room of Walton Hall, never associat ing with the Aggies. “Since at the end of three days of practice, Freckles was able to make such a splendid showing Saturday, there is probably no limit to her abi lities after one year of practice. “Now it is up to YOU, the student body of A&M to decide, to give your word of approval or disapproval or disapproval of this suggestion. AC TION is needed — IMMEDIATE ACTION — in order to permit Freckles to attend the SMU game this Saturday.” Freckles was elected the new mas cot by a vote of 618 to 3. However, Mullins said the dog would only be happy staying with him. So when Mullins graduated, Freckles would have to go with him. Mullins said he offered to breed Freckles, but she turned out to be sterile. Spot was the next mascot. Most Battalion stories about Spot were about his ability to chase girls and sleep. An October 19, 1956 article about Spot reported his major claim to fame was falling off the top of Kyle Field and breaking both paws. Spot recovered from the fall, but Spot was later run over by a car. Reveille II did not arrive on the scene until 1952. Reveille II started the unbroken line of successful mas cots.
