BROWNSVILLE (AP) — Offi
cials may never know why a Texas
department store collapsed, killing
14 people, but a preliminary report
will be available this week, an engi
neer investigating the accident said
Wednesday.
“I don’t think we’re going to be
able to pinpoint a cause,” Garry G.
Nichols said. “We’re working on it
now.”
Nichols and Glenn J. Winslow,
civil engineers with Birmingham-
based Southern Building Code Con
gress International Inc., were in
Brownsville for three days after the
three-story Amigo Store collapsed
Thursday.
The engineers, the primary inves
tigators of the collapse, said their job
has been made more difficult be
cause important building records
have been unavailable.
in a flood,” Nichols said.
The store was built in 1969 and
the third floor was added about
1975, Nichols said.
He said the city still is going
through its records, which were
stored in several locations, in search
of the construction plans. Nichols
said Brownsville building official
Tony Yzaguirre has said the records
may have been lost.

“We’ve been told that the building

the building was built and some of
the records may have been involved
Nichols said they had not found
the architect or engineer of the
building but that the city has con
tacted the contractor, who had no
copy of the construction .specifica
tions.
Nichols and Winslow said their in
vestigation also was hampered by
sketchy information from witnesses.
Winslow said in several months a
complete report will follow this
week’s release of a preliminary re
port.
Nichols said, “Although we don’t
expect to have any answers, we do
hope to keep the lines of commu
nication open.”

CORPUS CHRISTI (AP)-
Historians are digging trendies

the future Texas State Aquarium,
where Gen. Zachary Taylor once

Meanwhile, work on theaquar

The city hired James E. War

Is an HMO
Really
for you?
Mk ctually, a clinic-based HMO could be the best choice for you and your family.
/ F° r those who spend a majority of their monthly income on medical bills,
& ^ such programs can provide substantial savings. The same may be true for
JL*. JL. those already obtaining their medical care from the sponsoring clinic.
But others have found the restrictions imposed by HMO participation too limiting. For
example, you’ll have to switch from your current doctor to one employed by the HMO.
You’ll lose your present PCS card. You’ll forfeit your present dental coverage. You may
occasionally be required to leave the city for certain specialized tests and procedures -
even when those services are available locally.
Only traditional medical insurance
guarantees your freedom of choice
in health care. Before you surrender
that freedom, take the time to be
sure an HMO is the best choice for you
