Battalion Classified 845-2611 Page 4/The Battalion/Wednesday, May 25,1988 1.4 million GM cars being investigated for safety problems WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal safety authorities have opened a new investigation of 1.4 million Oldsmo- bile, Buick and Cadillac cars, tripling the number of General Motors Corp. autos being investigated to de termine if a mechanical defect causes them to speed up unexpec tedly. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Tuesday said 110 complaints involving 1985- 88 GM C-body cars, including the Oldsmobile 98, Buick Electra and Cadillac Deville and Fleetwood, al leged the cars showed unintended acceleration because of a “significant increase in engine speed and power output.” The complaints included reports of 67 accidents resulting in 43 inju ries, NHTSA said. NHTSA last year opened an engi neering evaluation of 703,000 GM H-body cars — the 1986-87 Oldsmo bile Delta 88 and Buick LeSabre, and the 1987 Pontiac Bonneville — after receiving more than 500 com plaints about sudden acceleration. Those cars reportedly had been in volved in more than 300 accidents, NHTSA said. The H-car and C-car investiga tions are separate cases on the NHTSA docket, but the center sug gested the possibility of a connection between sudden acceleration in the two types of vehicles. “Those cars share similar mechan ical components, and that’s why we believe that those (C-body) cars may experience a sudden acceleration problem that is as bad or worse than the H-body cars,” said Sam Gole, a spokesman for the center. He said the models involved in both investigations use similar elec tronic cruise control systems. GM said it had found no mechani cal cause for alleged sudden accele ration in the H-body cars, and so a comparison of the two vehicles was useless. “Comparing the systems doesn’t help anything. The fact is, we haven’t found anything,” said John Hartnett, director of GM’s Washing ton office. GM will cooperate with the NHTSA investigation but regards the sudden acceleration reports to be unproven, Hartnett said. Sudden acceleration allegations in recent years have involved nearly ev ery auto manufacturer, NHTSA said. News Briefs Eight injured in commuter plane crash LAWTON, Okla. (AP) — A commuter airplane bound for Dallas crashed Tuesday on take off from the Lawton Municipal Airport, injuring eight people, authorities said. None of the inju ries appeared to be critical. The 18-passenger Bandarante plane went down just after it had cleared the airport grounds, an official at the airport said. “I saw smoke pop up and had no idea where it was from,” said Sissy Anderson, a receptionist at Jet Away, an aircraft servicing and maintenance company “They say it was taking bounced down and hit the ground, bounced and hit again before the fire broke.” There were unconfirmed re ports the plane lost an engine on takeoff. The Atlantic Southeast Air lines plane was en route to Dallas when it crashed, authorities said. Jet loses both engines but lands safely NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A jet making an approach in bad weather Tuesday lost power in both engines and made an emer gency landing near an aban doned World War II airstrip six miles short of the airport, author ities said. The Taca International Air lines plane was on its way from San Salvador and had made a stop at Belize. All 36 passengers and nine crew members scrambled unharmed from the plane to a nearby levee as a driv ing rainstorm hit. The plane appeared unda maged. It landed on a narrow strip of grass, its wings barely fitting be tween a drainage canal “on one side and a levee on the other. Wit nesses said the plane was close to, but not on, the actual landing strip. The pilot radioed shortly after noon that he lost power in both engines of the Boeing 737, said Paul Bourg, an area supervisor at the control tower at New Orleans International Airport. Soviets say Afghan pullout delayed ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) — The Kremlin probably won’t of pulling meet the goal of pulling one- fourth of its soldiers out of Af ghanistan this month because guerrillas are overwhelming Afg han troops left behind, diplomats said Tuesday. Western diplomats based in Is lamabad said Moslem insurgents have harassed departing Red Army convoys and overrun a string of bases defended only by Afghan soldiers. Most of the bases are on the eastern border with Pakistan. “The regime has lost 18 district towns since mid-March, an un precedented string of losses with tactical implications,” strengthen ing the belief that the Afghan army cannot fight the guerrillas alone, one diplomat said. Soviet forces began their with drawal May 15 under terms of an agreement signed April 14 in Ge neva, and Lt. Gen. Boris Gromov had said 25 percent of the 115,000 soldiers would be out by the end of May. Meese denies ‘softer’ anti-drug stance WASHINGTON (AP) — At torney General Edwin Meese III said Tuesday there is “no soft ening whatsoever” of the Reagan administration’s zero tolerance anti-drug policy, despite modifi cations under which the Coast Guard will be more cautious about seizing boats outside the 12-mile limit. Under the administration’s zero tolerance policy, law en forcement agencies are cracking down on illegal drug use, no mat ter how small the amount. With the new changes, how ever, vessels outside the 12-mile limit found to be containing drugs will be seized only when there is evidence of intent to smuggle them into the United States. “I think that whenever you have a new policy there has to be kind of a running-in period where you look at the practical difficulties,” Meese told report ers. “There have been some oper ational refinements, but the pol icy remains the same.” Researcher: Drug fights bone cancer NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The natural protein interferon, com bined with standard chemothe rapy drugs, shows promise in controlling multiple myeloma, a lethal form of bone cancer, re searchers said Tuesday. “We finally have a leg up on ar resting the natural progression of the disease and producing pa tients who are alive at five years, which has been a rarity,” said Dr. Martin M. Oken of the University of Minnesota. His research is part of a new ef fort by scientists to find a role for interferon by combining it with the drugs that have long been used to attack cancer. Oken said interferpn might provide a knockout punch after cancer has been weakened, but not destroyed, by medicines. The work may also represent a revival of interferon, which has been on a roller coaster of public acclaim for a decade. Interferon is a natural, hor mone-like substance that, among other things, helps regulate the body’s immune system. When the human gene that makes this chemical was isolated, some ex perts predicted many uses for in terferon in eliminating cancer. About 11,000 new cases of multiple myeloma and 5,000 cases of chronic myelogenous leu kemia are found each year. This form of leukemia can be effectively treated with bone mar row transplants. However, many victims do not receive transplants because no suitable narrow do nors are available. We & We now have a Bryan Dental Center 1 103 E.
