Evans Library is a collection of various skins, skulls and skeletons. It is the Texas Cooperative Wildlife Collec tion, which scientists use to compare and contrast mammals’ physical structures. Now, new data will allow scientists to discern genetic differences as well. Taking samples of frozen tissues from some specimens in the collec tion will complement the traditional taxidermic preparations of the mammals. Wildlife sciences lecturer Paisley Cato said the tissue samples- eluding heart, liver and will be used to examine thedit of mammals. “It’s like a thn mensional library,” she said. Among tissue study tech® are chromosomal banding,w volves treatments of the ch® somes themselves, and sis — putting an electrical through a protein sample. The tissues will be frozen inu cold freezers which are fill liquid nitrogen and kept at ... grees Celsius, Cato said. Frs prolongs the life of the protti the tissues. Without freezing, thi sues would decay and experm tion would not be possible, sheis Spring season brings trouble with asphalt on Texas highways AUSTIN (AP) — Bill Ward says the biggest one he saw was out near Yoakum back in 1981, and it blocked a whole highway. “It was so big you could fit a city bus in it and, if I’m not mistaken, a pickup truck was stuck at the bot tom,” Ward said. “You could say it was a pothole of Herculean propor tions.” Blacktop rarely unravels to the point described by Ward, coordina tor of the Transportation Research Center at the University of Texas. The former Highway Department official said “the whole road just dis appeared” when a sulfur mine un dermined the asphalt. Sooner or later, however, every motorist experiences the sickening feeling of bearing down on an axle snapping, wheel-warping, hubcap stealing pothole at 60 mph. Spring is pothole season and re pair crews are up to their asphalt in alligator cracks — as blacktop frac tures are known. There is good and bad news where the rubber meets the road. Engineers have thoroughly re searched the dynamics of potholes and scientists are applying the knowledge to create a new genera tion of paving materials. But con struction and maintenance costs are becoming so high that politicians may balk when it’s time tol maintain highways. The Federal Highway tration lists 285,962 miles ways, roads and streets in more than in New York and nia combined. If stretched end, the state’s pavement reach the moon and complete bit. Keeping Texans rolling isefl sive. Scores of federal, state,B and city agencies spent tnort $900 million to patch an esti®: 90 million potholes across the during fiscal year 1986.
