Hundreds of peering fans anxiously are waiting for the opponents to climb into the ring and start the match. At last, the Bt rings and Fight Night begins. Bnght Night may not be the fight of the decade, but it is the next best ihing to it at T exas A&M. Bfne 12th annual Fight Night, sponsored by the Sigma Phi Epsilon Bternity, will be held F'riday and j Saturday at the Brazos County Pavil- lion. BChairnian of the event Scott Sech, a senior pre-medicine major and a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, said any student at A&M can participate in the boxing tournament in either Greek division — which has fra ternities fighting against each other or in the open division. ie inlet' itch ttie | itiirdai' E “The open division includes any independent teams such as the Corps, the Boxing Club or any stu dents wanting to put teams together and fight,” Sech said. ■“Last year we had 12 teams, five of which were in the open division,” Sech said. Every fight consists of three one- and-a-half-minute rounds, Sech said. There are five weight classes with a champion chosen from each. “The tournament is based on a point system,” Sech said. “Each team gets points when their fighters win. This determines the team that wins overall.” Sech said teams start to train for the tournament early in the semester and some teams even train with box ing chibs. The people who participate in Fight Night volunteer to fight, Sech said. “If there is more than one person from the same weight class inter ested in fighting, we have a box-off,” he said. Russell Eppright, a senior con struction science major and a mem ber of Sigma Phi Epsilon, fought in Fight Night in 1985 and 1986. Ep pright said he became interested in boxing after participating, in the tournament and started boxing for A&M. “I liked to box and the coach who taught us basic boxing skills before the tournament was also the coach of thie A&M teafn,” he said. Kirk Harrison, a junior business analysis and accounting major and a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, participated in the tournament in 1987. “I always wanted to see what it is like to step into a ring and box,” Harrison said. “It is one of those things you want to try and say you did it. You may not want to become the greatest person at it, but you would like to be able to say that you’ve done it before.” Sech said the boxing tournament is not the only activity at the event. “Last year we had the A&M Tae Kwon Do Club come out to do an ex hibition and there were pillow fights between the sororities,” Sech said. “The pillow fights are not supposed to be competitive, but some of the sororities seem to think they are.” Sigma Phi Epsilon plans to donate the proceeds from Fight Night to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Sech said. pexas counties sue disposal authority PASO (AP) — An official said the Texas Low- naming as defendants the authority, its board t£vel Radioactive Waste Disposal Authority’s “shove-it- ■pvn-our-throats” approach to choosing a dump site forced Hudspeth and El Paso counties to sue the au thority. ■P ^ so County Attorney Joe Lucas said Tuesday the authority has not told the whole truth about its site-se- jBtion process, and that it secretly has settled on a site icT n ? rt ^ F°n Hancock, Texas, about 40 miles south of flCt ElPaso. BThe authority’s special programs director, Tom ■rackburn, defended the site-selection process Tues- sa ying the authority has always tried to work openly. he lawsuit, filed Monday in state district court and naming as defendants tne authority, its board of direc tors and state Attorney General Jim Mattox, alleges the authority is violating the state consititution and did not follow state law in the selection process. The waste disposal authority has not announced a fi nal selection and has not even said whether the Huds peth site is its first choice, but it plans to open an office in Fort Hancock within two months. It will be the authority’s only office at a proposed site. The lawsuit contends that the authority already has chosen the Fort Hancock site without admitting it, and that the authority did not consider other places in the state, especially neglecting to search for sites on private land.
