Page 6/At Ease/Thursday, April 7,1988 By Carol Goswick Chamber music, usually played by a small ensemble, originated in the 1700s when people would sip coffee after dinner and listen to the relaxing tunes, says Sara Wall, chairman of the MSC Operating and Performing Arts Society. At 8 p.m. on April 11, Texas A&M students will get a chance to experience the chamber music of the Marlboro Festival performances in the theater of Rudder Tower. The performing group was formed in 1965 by famous musician Rudolph Servin in Marlboro, Vt., where it consisted mostly of students. The number of musicians in the group has since varied from year to year. This year is the first for MSC OPAS to book the performers on their annual Music From Marlboro tour around the United States and abroad. Wall, a junior speech communications major says. “The instruments vary from tour group to tour group but this time the musicians will play brass and woodwind instruments,” she says. Eight musicians will perform for the A&M audience playing selections from Mozart, Janacek, Ligiti and Beethoven, she says, on instruments that will include the oboe, bassoon, horn, flute and clarinet. “Mozart, among others, wrote a lot of chamber music which is written especially for small ensembles as opposed to music written for symphonies,” she explains. Wall says this ensemble, presented by Columbia Artists, has recorded music in conjunction with Steinway Pianos, CBS Masterworks and Marlboro Recording Society. Wall says the OPAS tries to schedule at least one performance each month for its audiences. The society goes through agents representing groups like this one in order to determine if the program satisfies its needs. “We have to look at availability, cost and whether the type of performing group would meet our goals as a committee,” Wall says. Groups such as the Music From Marlboro tour have agents that contact different organizations, university-based or not, that provide this kind of entertainment to the community. Tickets are on sale for Music From Marlboro at the MSC Box Office in the lobby of Rudder Tower and at Dillards Ticketron outlet. They will be available through the day of the performance at $5.50, $6.75 and $8.50 for students and $6.50, $8.00 and $10.00 for non-students, says Wall.
