College Skaggs Center Page 8/The Battalion/Friday, December 11, 1987 Soldier testifies to killing pregnant wife with knife BELTON (AP) — A sobbing sol dier testified Thursday that he killed and dismembered his pregnant wife after she told him he was not the fa ther of their baby daughter or un born child. “She told me she had to go out to get pregnant,” Pfc. Earnest Jack ChappelTe said at the murder trial where he is fighting to receive a rul ing of voluntary manslaughter. Chappelle is accused m the July 31 slaying of Lisa Marie Chappelle, 19, whose head and arms were found in a dumpster near the Uni versity of Texas in Austin on Aug. 1. Chappelle testified he used his Army knife and a carpenter’s saw to dismember the body. He said he put the parts in bags and placed them in dumpsters at Fort Hood, where he was stationed, and Austin. He also said he removed the un born child from his dead wife and placed the body in a separate bag. “I named her,” Chappelle said in the tesdmony he gave during the lengthy trial. “Lisa and I had agreed to name our second baby Carolyn if it was a girl. It was a girl.” Chappelle spoke of the unborn baby that was killed when his wife was slayed. The soldier, in civilian clothes, was called to the witness stand by de fense lawyer Hollis Lewis of Killeen, who has said he would ask jurors to convict Chappelle of the lesser of fense of voluntary manslaughter, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Chappelle could be sent to prison for life if convicted of murder. In his testimony, Chappelle re counted the marital problems he and his wife faced. He said she had returned to their Killeen trailer home in an effort to reconcile the re portedly unstable marriage. How ever, Chappelle cited her inability to care for their year-old daughter and then asked his wife to leave the property. She picked up the child and said, “I’m going and you can’t stop me,” he testified. He said he grabbed her and kept her in the trailer. After she made a hone call she returned to the itchen, where Chappelle was using his Army knife on a rabbit he had hit with his car “She told me I couldn’t stop her from taking the baby,” he testified, adding that she insulted his man hood. “She told me I wasn’t (the daugh ter’s) father,” Chappelle said. “She also told me I wasn’t the father of the baby she was pregnant with. “I was thinking, Tve got to stop her. She is going to take my baby.’ I hit her in the chest.” Chappelle said he had the Army knife in his hand when he hit her. He testified that he continued to stab her, but had not intended to kill her. “I just wanted her to leave, leave me alone, leave my baby alone, just leave, just leave,” he said. Chappelle recalled that he then tried to save the seven-month fetus but failed. He said he went to his parents’ home in San Antonio but did not mention the slaying. A week later, after hearing that body parts had been found in the Austin dumpster, he went to Killeen police. “I didn’t know whether or not I had killed her,” he testified. “I re member now.” Woman claims spirits adviser stole money HOUSTON (AP) — A spiritual adviser accused of bilking $3,600 from a British woman who be lieved a curse caused her stomach pains remained in jail Thursday on a theft charge, police said.
