Monday, November 23, 1987/The Battalion/Page 7 Red Raiders must wait and see if a bowl bid is in the near future From the Associated Press Three Southwest Conference teams will be in bowl games but the Texas Tech Red Raiders feel like a suitor whose date didn’t show up. Arkansas is in the Liberty Bowl Dec. 29 against Georgia. Texas A&M and Texas will decide Thanksgiving night who meets Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day. The loser plays in the Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston on New Year’s eve against Pittsburgh. Texas Tech could have wrapped up an Independence Bowl victory by defeating Houston but had to settle fora 10-10 tie. Now, the Red Raiders will have to wait while the Independence Bowl officials take a seconn look. “I don’t know where we stand,” said Tech Coach Spike Dykes. ‘‘We’ll go back to the drawing board. We’re talking to West Vir ginia and some other people,” said Independence Bowl chairman Smo- key Hyde. Sunday, Sun Bowl offi cials in El Paso announced West Vir ginia would play against Oklahoma State in that game. Tulane is the other team for the Dec. 19 game in Bossier City, La. A&M is the two-time defending SWC champion. A&M has defeated Auburn and lost to Ohio State in the last two Cotton Bowls. Texas hasn’t played in the Cotton Bowl since a 10- 9 loss to Georgia that cost the ’Horns the national title in 1984. It will be Notre Dame’s fifth ap pearance in the Dallas game, The Ir ish are 3-1. Saturday, Texas’ Eric Metcalf scored three touchdowns to take the ’Horns to a 34-16 victory over Bay lor. Metcalf returned a punt 59 yards for a score. “We want to play Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl,” said Texas cor- nerback Tony Griffin. “We didn’t have any fun the last time we were in the Bluebonnet Bowl.” A&M’s Darren Lewis ran 80-yards for a touchdown to kill off TCU. Lewis fumbled an option pitch, picked the ball up, broke a tackle, and ran the distance for a fourth quarter score to propel the Aggies to a 42-24 victory. “I can play a little basketball, too, maybe (A&M basketball Coach) Shelby Metcalf can use me,” said Le wis, a freshman who had 194 yards rushing. “I missed the ball but it just came right back up to me.” A&M Coach Jackie Sherrill said of the peculiar play: “Somebody is looking out for us and is on our side.” TCU Coach Jim Wacker said the run knocked all the emotion out of the Frogs, who had just gone ahead on a field goal. “We collapsed on the ball when he fumbled it and boom he goes 80 yards,” Wacker said. “You can’t get a play much more bizzare than that.” TCU was hampered by the ab sence of ace running back Tony Jeff ery, who was declared ineligible by the NCAA on Friday for dealings with a professional agent. “Anytime you take your best foot ball player off the field it’s tough,” Wacker said. “Our running backs gave it everything they had. We just made too many critical errors.” The showdown with Texas is what A&M was looking for after an early season loss to Texas Tech. “This is what we’ve worked for,” said Sherrill. “It should be a tremen dous game. We’ll have to quit our mistakes. I thought we were going to give this one away.” Houston and Rice finish their sea sons on Saturday in a noon game from Rice Stadium.
