If it’s not safe, they won’t let you do it.” Redpot, junior redpot and yellow- pot are the titles given to student group leaders at bonfire. Redpots are the coordinators for bonfire. Ju nior redpots, apprentices to redpots, prepare to assume the coordinating role the next year. Yellowpots are crew chiefs for the dorms. The pots are passed on from year to year based on enthusiasm, effort and leadership ability, Scott Wille, Law Hall’s yellowpot, says. to be redpots, Wille says they a contribute. “Cookie crew is essential, bu: they are willing to work — 1 me really work — they deserve to beo there,” Wille says. “Some ofthosei dies swing an ax better than I do, | by all means let them work.” Recent altercations over won inside the perimeter served as a las minder of last year’s harassment! ports. There are no female leaders, but Off-Campus Aggies had a female crew chief last year, Mallory says. Beth Harp, also in W-l, says there are not more women leaders at bon fire because nobody has wanted to be a redpot. She says it’s very time- consuming and strenuous. “Someone told me once that every Corps member should dream of be ing a redpot,” says Harp, ajunior ag ricultural economics major. “I guess I just don’t have the same dreams.” Although all women do not want Mallory says bonfire has and always will be, a time to let steam, to “get grody.” “You have to know whattoex) when you come out and if you’re prepared for what goes on,” he “then it can lx- off ensive. w th lai in br th in ar th R; Jc d( 8( ‘Anybody that takes anyofitp® ■ I sonally is wrong. Light showers fail to douse blazes in Southern states ATLANTA (AP) — Scattered light rain moved across parts of the drought-stricken South on Monday, but forest fires remained out of con trol in some states and forestry offi cials cautioned against too much op timism. “We may get a couple of days of relief but one rain is not going to take us out of the fire season,” U.S. Forest Service spokesman Doug Wil liams in Atlanta said. He said rain fell over Texas, Mis sissippi, Louisiana, Kentucky and West Virginia as a cold front swung eastward across the region. Fire fighters reported higher humidity and morning dew in some areas, he said. West Virginia Gov. Arch Moore called out the National Guard on Monday to help firefighters. Na tional Guardsmen also have been ac tivated in Alabama, Georgia, Ten nessee, Virginia and Kentucky, where 10 helicopters sprayed homes threatened in Middlesboro. Heavy smoke from the fires had drifted northeastward and cut visi bility as far as New England on Sun day. On Monday morning, the smelly haze had moved into north ern Maine and New Hampshire, the National Weather Service said, but the advancing cold front began clearing the air over Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
