NIH authorities said the unidenti fied worker apparently became in fected when his hand was cut acci dently during the process of concentrating the virus. Dr. Robert McKinney, director of the NIH’s division of safety, said in an interview that the worker was contaminated in 1985 and the infec tion was first detected in May 1986. Although two subsequent tests have confirmed AIDS antibodies in the worker’s blood, McKinney said there are no indications the person yet has developed symptoms of ac- 3 uired immune aeficiency syn- rome. The CIA got a black eye in No vember 1985 when KGB officer Vi taly Yurchenko “re-defected” back to Moscow, CIA Director William Webster conceded. But since then, he said, “there has been a substantial increase in the number of intelli gence officers assigned to this work and a shift in emphasis.” “And I can assure you that I will be watching this carefully, because the defectors that we can recruit can be a substantial assistance to the United States,” Webster told the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations in his first public testi mony since being confirmed in his job last May 19. Carole 779-1405. 29tl0/15 845-2611 DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers Union and General Motors Corp., the nation’s largest automaker, reached agreement Thursday on a tentative contract. The agreement came four days after the union signed a contract with Ford Motor Co. Union President Owen Bieber and Vice President Donald F. Ephlin said in a written statement that the three-year contract will “achieve job security for our GM membership and make stable employment a part of the way this corporation aoes business.” “This settlement ensures unprece dented job security and provides sig nificant economic gains for our hourly employees,” said Alfred S. Warren Jr., a GM vice president who headed the company bargaining team. “At the same time, we have estab lished a framework which provides opportunities for General Motors to increase its competitive capability,” Warren said. Neither the company nor the union provided details pending rati fication and neither mentioned how closely the agreement was patterned after the contract reached last month at Ford. Union officials who asked not to be identified had earlier said the pact strongly resembled the contract reached with Ford. The negotiators’ main task had been to fit the job-protecting Ford Motor Co. pact, which was signed Monday, to much-larger GM. GM also had said it still needs to cut costs, trim its work force and buy more parts from outside the com pany rather than make them in its own factories. GM makes 70 percent of its own parts while Ford makes 50 percent and Chrysler Corp., whose contract expires next year, makes 30 percent. Negotiators worked to solve these problems within the bounds of the Ford pact, which bars layoffs for most causes, such as transfer of work outside the company, automation, new technology or reorganization of workers. Workers may be laid off if pro duction volume is cut due to slow sales, unless Ford replaces a U.S.- made Ford part or vehicle wi! outside or imported one. The contract halves Ford’s:: tion rate by requiring theautoiri 1 to replace one of every two wd who leaves. GM has announced plansioi all or part of 16 plants, oil! 36,000 jobs, by the end oil!
