"King" Carrasco cruises onto stage in Aggieland by Staci Finch After four years of absence from the American rock scene, Joe “King” Carrasco is back, and he is hotter than ever. Carrasco brings his show to Texas A&M’s DeWare Field House Friday, Sept. 18 at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $5.50 at the door or at the MSC Box Office. Carrasco’s latest album, Bandido Rock reflects his recent travels in Central America, but he has lost none of that driving, party music style that has made him the favorite of club patrons all across America. He swings into his new album with some pretty strong lyrics about the policital situation in Central and South America, and he backs up those lyrics with a swinging beat that is impossible not to dance to. His first song, “Juarez And Zapata,” mixes guitars with politics, and the rest of side one is just as strong and full of comments on U.S. involvement in Central and South American countries. But Joe King is always irrepresible, and the song “Banana” is a fun tune that suggests all people are alike because they like bananas. While Carrasco may not be on most radio stations’ playlists, he is a favorite of clubs in every state in the union. Music critic Ronni Lundy of Tune In says Joe King and his band Las Coronas (the crowns are known by two groups of people, “those who think he is the most manaiacally charged, unpredictable, all-stops-pulled rockin’ good time performer of the decade, and those who don’t get the joke.” Joe King’s stage performance was well noted when he played at Charlie’s Paradise Bar in South Padre Island last March. According to critic Bruce Lee Smith of Valley Nights, Carrasco had the girls dancing on the stage, the boys slam dancing, half the crowd stage diving and the other half gyrating on tables and chairs. “That has got to be one of the wildest shows I have seen,” Smith said in his article.
