:dberg crushes Krishnan to move into U.S. Open semis
TTCS
NEW YORK (AP) — Second-
^ ieded Stefan Edberg used a blister-
serve-and-volley attack to over-
ower unseeded Ramesh Krishnan
‘2, 6-2, 6-2 Thursday and move
TH FOR lto t ^ ie sem ifi na l s °f the U-S- Open
or' \ TVG :nn ^ s championships for the second
KLrAL.w ;raight year.
IN Krishnan’s finesse game was no
latch for Edberg’s assault.
“Right from the beginning, he was
II over me,” said Krishnan, the last
. nseeded player left in singles play.
AT T( }\ “We were always fighting it out on
L ' ly serve. I thought I was very well
repared. I played the way I wanted
>, but I thought he was a little bit
uicker on the court.”
HE
Edberg needed five sets to beat
Krishnan in the third round at last
year’s Open.
“I think I’ve improved as a player
since then,” the 21-year-old Swede
said. “I started off very well today. I
didn’t give him anything.”
The highlight of the match was
the 24-minute, 38-point third game
of the second set. Krishnan had
seven game points, but Edberg
ended up winning the game to take a
3-0 lead.
Krishnan, ranked 42nd in the
world, said he was pleased with his
showing in the tournament.
“Even today I felt I was well pre
pared,” the 26-year-old Indian said.
“I just got outplayed.”
Edberg, who lost to Ivan Lendl in
last year’s semifinals, will play the
winner of Thursday night’s Miloslav
Mecir-Mats Wilander match on Sat
urday.
Mecir, the No. 5 seed, holds a 4-3
lifetime edge over Edberg.
“I lost to him at Key Biscayne, but
I beat him three times in a row be
fore that,” Edberg said. “So I know
how to beat him.”
Wilander, seeded third, has
beaten Edberg six times in 10 meet-
ings.
“Mats is playing very well from

“I have to play him the same way as
Mecir — serve well and attack.”
