Denton blacksmith uses tools of past in creation of art DENTON (AP) — With glowing forge and pounding hammers, the blacksmith shop gives a glimpse of yesterday. The designs that come from Paul’s Forge, however, owe more to today and tomorrow than to the past. “I do modern work, things from today and tomorrow and a Tittle bit from yesterday,” says Paul Matthaus, who turns out hand-forged crafts at his shop in Denton. “Modern, abs tract designs excite me.” Matthaus pays tribute to the past with his candle holders, letter hold ers and ashtrays made to look as if they were formed from harnesses or horseshoes. Those items, and his handcrafted knives, sell well at shows, but his heart lies with the modern sculpture he forges. “I get my ideas from books from Europe and the United States, and not only books but the different things I see,” he says. “An artistic blacksmith has unlimited designs. Take different types of met^l and put them together and you can make anything the customer wants.” Much of Matthaus’ work is stan dard forge contract work. He pro duces gates and window bars to or der, hoods for fireplaces and kitchen stoves, racks for pots, chandeliers, and irons and fireplace tools. He works with a designer and his forged steel, stainless steel and tem- pered steel — often mixed with other metals — all is designed for customer approval. producing one-of-a- ed works ke keeps him a His love of kind handcrafted happy man. “It satisfies me very much, to take metal and twist it, bend it and make something not everybody does,” he says. “It’s an interesting trade. I love to mix metals to make abstract de signs. Different kinds of metals give different moods. I love to come to my shop. I love to design and be my own boss.” Being his own boss b important to Matthaus, who was born in Wender- born, Blast Germany, near the Polish border. After World Waf II, Wen- derborn was under Communist domination. “I and my family escaped to West Berlin in 1955 and got free forever,” says Matthaus, who came to the United States in 1971. “I’ve been forging since 1955, too, since I was 15 years old,” he says. “My father was a barber and there was a blacksmith shop next door. I didn’t like my father’s trade, so I went next door.” Matthaus started out shoeing horses and repairing farm eouip- ment. He quit shoeing horses about 10 years ago. “It’s a tough living, especially here in Texas with the heat,” ne says. Although Matthaus has to go to other states to get the coal he burns in the forge he designed himself and has to make his own tools because the types he needs are not made in the United States, Texas b now hb home.
