In 1986, he won the “best of snow” in home beer brewing at the Hamilton County Fair in Cincin nati. ■Spangler isn’t resting on his lau rels. He is delving more deeply into the attractions of brewing Euro- pean-style, dark beers. ■“I used to do a lot of fishing. But this works out better — it’s more productive ... I do it between the Ipt dogs and chili on the stove. I’ve |t two little ones running around,” said of his sons, Nicholas, 6, and Russell, 3. “When they go to bed, I go and brew beer.” His wife, Vickie, helps him bottle his hobby. Then they get to reap the rewards of a job well done. “I like the exotic, heavy beers. I like drinking them and brewing them. You’re only limited by your uals for beer brewers. nst 718 contestants — by brewing a thick, Belgian ale which he calls the Toadex Bloatarian Abbey Ale. Span gler prefers the richer body and taste of the heavier, European beers “I like the exotic, heavy beers. I like drinking them and brewing them. You’re only limited by your imagina tion. The whole thing of brewing is to relax and have a beer. It’s not hard work. ” — Ray Spangler, home brewer imagination,” Spangler said in an in terview. “The whole thing of brew ing is to relax and have a beer. It’s not hard work.” Spangler, 35, sells office furniture in Cincinnati by day. He uses his off- hours to tend his vats, tubing and other brewing equipment at his sub urban home in nearby Erlanger, Ky. He started homebrewing three years ago as a beginner, learning about the various grains and brew ing techniques. He has graduated to more exotic beer recipes and to reading 600-page, commercial man- to the lighter, more thirst-quenching American beers. “But I’m not putting them down,” he said of American beers. “Those who are serious about beers drink them all.” Spangler’s equipment limits him to brewing five or six gallons at a time. He says that is a common pro duction capacity for amateur home brewers. The next level is what is known as a microbrewer, a person or group that sells the product commercially and may distribute it to a region. Spangler says he knows of about 50 microbrewers in the country. They brew as much as 100 barrels of beer a year, selling perhaps 12,000 to 13,000 bottles. Because of their limited produc tion capacities, microbrewers often charge discriminating customers $1 or more per bottle. Spangler hopes to increase his brewing capacity, but doesn’t envi sion becoming anything more than a small brewer. He is president of Bloatarian Brewing League, a Cin- cinnati-area brewing club, whose members meet periodically to dis cuss the finer points of home brew ing with seasoned veterans and new comers. Newcomers can get into home brewing with an investment of $50 for a startup kit, Spangler said. Brewing accidents, such as explo sions resulting from improperly pre pared batches, aren’t common and can be avoided by carefully follow ing recipes, he said. But all home brewers must be careful to sterilize equipment to avoid contaminating beer with infec tions that taint a fermenting brew and kill its taste, Spangler said.
