Bill Clements has been referred, in dicated Monday that there are no plans to soon consider the proposal. Rep. Pete Laney, D-Hale Center, presiaed over a committee meeting that heard testimony on several bills. However, Laney cautioned the audience, “If you’re here for that purpose (the impeachment study resolution) . . . rest assured it will not be taken up today.” Reps. Paul Moreno, D-El Paso, and Al Edwards, D-Houston, intro duced the resolution to begin a study of whether impeachment proceed ings should take place in light of the latest revelations in the Southern Methodist University football scan dal. A new report prepared by Meth odist bishops said Clements, as for mer chairman of the SMU board of governors, participated in a plan to continue cash payments to football players in violation of NCAA rules and later took part in an effort to cover up the payments. Clements, a Republican, has branded the impeaenment inquiry g roposal as partisan politics. House peaker Gib Lewis and Laney have said they aren’t eager to take action on the resolution, noting that SMU is a private school and Clements wasn’t in public office at the time. V/YLBUR.! Most of the entertainment avail able via this club scene is musically oriented, whether it be in the form of live bands or disc-jockeys. Review One form of entertainment that has not shared in this growth, however, is comedy. Deranged Durang, a local improv- isational group, is trying to change that. Deranged Durang was created six months ago by Drue Franklin, who had two basic goals in mind. First, he wanted to establish improvi- sational comedy as an entertainment alternative for local club patrons, and second, he wanted to provide a learning experience for the mem bers of Deranged Durang. The group, somewhat surprised with the success of its first two per formances, made plans to continue through at least the end of this year. Dan Kehoe retired as a performing member after the latest performance, while Donna Copeland is the group’s technician. Photo by Stnii fa Members of the comedy group Deranged Durang perform at Eastgate Live, one of many nightclubs in College Station. The group uses ideas from the audience to produce a constantly changing snow. The members come from a vari ety of backgrounds, but most have previous experience in the theater arts. Smith, the current group director, says Deranged Durang would like to attend comedy workshops in Austin and perform there. Eventually, he would like to see the group reach a point at which they could give their own comedy workshops here. The audience plays a big role in each show and the success of an eve ning’s performance often depends on crowd input. Several of the skits are designed to take suggestions from the audience and incorporate them into the act. Creative input for the skits comes from every member of the group. The skits constantly are changed and rearranged while some are dropped altogether. Smith says that no two shows are similar. Problems have surfaced in the past when the troupe has done warm-ups for musical performers. “The whole crowd is there to see a band and they are not there to be en tertained by comedy,” Smith says. The troupe’s latest performance was Wednesday at Eastgate Live. The highly energetic performance was certainly a refresning change from the usual assortment of musi cal bands that have played in town. T he show lasted approximately two hours and moved at an extremely rapid pace. The funnier skits of the evening included “Chariots of Fire,T off of the movie, and “Polilio bate,” in which three unlikelij dential candidates fielded fit! from the audience. Most oftfr were enjoyable and a hai very good. Those 18 years or older aft come to each performance and 1 is a good chance one will find!’ admission a good investmef fun evening.
