Goldfine comeback helps Ags beat Hogs for 1st time in 9 years By Ed Bodde Assistant Sports Editor The Texas A&M men’s tennis team defeated Arkansas 7-2 Thursday at the Omar Smith Tennis Center. It was the Aggies first win over the Razorbacks in nine years. A&M clinched the win after Dean Goldfine came from behind to win his No. 2 singles match. Goldfine and Arkansas’ Danny Granot split the first two sets be fore Granot took a seemingly comfortable 5-1 lead in the third and final set. But Goldfine was able to force a tie-breaker and win the match 6-0, 6-7, 7-6. “I didn’t want to give up, and he (Granot) was chipping and charging on the serve and vol leying,” Goldfine said. “We hadn’t beaten Arkansas in a long time and that really made me want this one more. This was the best comeback that I can remem ber.” In all, A&M won five of the six singles matches. The Aggies’ No. 1 singles player, Marcel Vos, beat Simon Robinson in straight sets 6- 3, 6-3. Vos is now 16-5 on the year in singles play. Goldfine and Vos completed a perfect day for themselves as they teamed up to win the No. 1 dou bles 6-4, 6-0, over Robinson and Simone of Arkansas. “Dean Goldfine really had a great comeback from being down 5-1,” A&M Coach David Kent said. Vos really played good ten nis. This was a great comeback and a great team effort. It was a great win for us.” Lady Aggies slip past Owls in conference tennis action By Hal L. Hammons Sports Writer The Texas A&M women’s tennis team came through with a big con ference win over Rice Thursday at Royal Oaks Country Club. The 5-4 match went right down to the wire as the Lady Aggies had to win the final two doubles matches to get the victory. A&M raised their record to 8-18 and 2-5 in the Southwest Confer ence. The Owls are 1-6 in confer ence action. The Lady Aggies had lost three SWC matches in a row, so Coach Bobby Kleinecke said his team was especially appreciative of the win. “We’ve been waiting a long time for this,” Kleinecke said. After splitting the singles matches 3-3, A&M’s No. 3 doubles team of Missy Kibler and Sammy Gonzalez lost quickly to Marion Campbell and Liz Sulzberger 6-0, 6-3. The other matches went to three sets, but the Lady Aggies prevailed in both. No. 2 team Lisa Keller and Jenifer Jones knotted the match with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win. The No. 1 duo of Kim Labuschagne and Laura Leong fin ished it off by winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. In singles action, Labuschagne de feated Allison Culver 6-3, 6-2; Liong beat Emily Cates 7-6, 2-6, 6-3; Keller lost to Campbell 7-6, 7-5; Jones beat Lori Cronk 3-6, 6-2, 6-3; Sulzberger beat Kibler 6-4, 4-6, 7-6; and Melissa Dowling lost to Meggan Tanner 6-0, 6-1. Home runs lead Orioles past Rangers BALTIMORE (AP) — Consec utive home runs by Fred Lynn and Ray Knight touched off a tie-break ing six-run sixth inning and Ken Gerhart also homered to lead the Baltimore Orioles past the Texas Rangers 8-6 Thursday night. Lynn’s drive to center field off Texas starter Mike Mason, 0-1, snapped a 2-2 tie. Third baseman Knight, whose throwing error gave Texas an unearned run in the third inning, followed with a shot over the left-field fence, and the Orioles scored four more runs before Texas recorded the first out. Terry Kennedy followed the con secutive homers with a double that chased Texas’ Mike Mason, 0-1. GGbbk CLEARANCE ;:x SCHULMAN THEATRES 2.50 ADMISSION 1. Any Show Before 3 PM 2. Tuesday - All Seats 3.
