Chris Hyndman, manager of Great Plains, described the system as a Ziplock baggie for grain. Only this baggie is made from 220 concrete bunkers 10 feet by 4 feet, he said. The idea is new to Texas, Hynd man said. It originated in Australia when a businessman-farmer devel oped the PVC bunker storage sys tem. The use of PVC-coated fabric panels for grain storage grew out of their use for control of water evapo ration and seepage. By using a gas impermeable membrane, the known benefits of a practical gas-tight envi ronment could be adapted for stor ing grain, he said. Hyndman said the first PVC stor age bunkers were erected in New South Wales, Australia, in 1977 and have since been used primarily in the Corn Belt of the United States. “The big advantage of these hun kers is you can build it, fill it and empty it and still cover your costs in a year’s time,” he said. And, the concrete will be there forever for future storage. In Advance ‘Theta SK-RurT to help Phoebe’s Homt Phoebe’s Home, a Christian- based shelter for abused women and their children, is the true fin ish line for the annual “Theta-5K Run,” sponsored by the Texas A&rM chapter of Kappa Alpha T heta sorority.
