(AP) — A strug gling Pat Bradley birdied the I7th hole here Sunday to close the door on Chris Johnson and capture her 22nd career tour victory in the $300,000 LPGA Turquoise Classic. T he crown also was the first this season for Bradley, last year’s LPGA Player of the Year wih $492,021 in winnings and five titles. The tourna ment was the seventh of the season. Bradley, 36, played erratically compared to her normal precision — making four birdies, three bogeys and an eagle — but still managed a 3-under-par round of 70 on the 6,419-yard Moon Valley Country Club course. She finished 72 holes at 6-under 286, two shots ahead of Johnson. “I had a lot of challenges today, and I met them all,” she said. “I was up and down all day. I continue to amaze myself. Each time I go out . . . to have the strength to muster up the things that I do; to turn bad things into good.” “Whoever followed me got their money’s worth today. I earned the money all the way around,” Bradley added. The $45,000 she received for first place boosted her 1987 earnings to $77,852. Johnson, who had birdied only one hole on the back nine in three previous trips, rolled in five of them after the turn, finishing with a re- cord-tying 67 and a four-day total of 288. Penny Pulz set the record Satur day. Course officials said they were not sure what the previous record had been because this was the first time the event has been played at Moon Valley. Johnson, 28, a seventh-year pro, won the Phoenix-based tournament in 1984, when it was named the Sa maritan Turquoise Classic and was played at a different club. “This morning I knew I had a f ood chance to finish high. I didn’t now I’d have a chance to win it,” Johnson said. “It felt good to be in that position — to have a chance to win and not have to fight and scratch to be in the top ten.” Lori Garbacz fired a 70 to take third-place money at 290, and Penny Hammel finished fourth with a 1- under 291 after shooting even-par 73. Juli Inkster, Cathy Gerring and Susan Sanders made it seven golfers who made par or under, deadlock ing for fifth with 292s. Pulz, who started the day tied with Bradley, bogeyed the first and third holes en route to a 7-over 80 and a tournament total of 296. Bradley bogeyed two of the first seven holes on the front side before pitching in from 85 yards for an ea gle-3 on the 473-yai d eighth hole. However, she bogeyed the next hole after hitting her tee shot into a water hazard and her second shot into a sand trap. True to the roller-coaster round, Bradley sank a 12-foot putt for bir die on the 10th hole. “I could have gone for large num bers on No. 9, but then I bounced back with a birdie on No. 10. I knew things were happening, and I had to keep myself in check,” Bradley said.
