College Station (near Winn-Dixie) 693-9358 A&M teams off track in SWC Indoor meet Texas A&M finished a disap pointing seventh in the 14th South west Conference Indoor Men’s Track and Field Championship in Fort Worth Saturday. Arkansas took the championship for the seventh year in a row with a total of 93 points. Texas was second with 59 points. The Aggies, who had to compete without top shot putter Randy Bar nes, totaled just 26 1 /2 points after scoring 62 last season. Barnes had to withdraw because of an ulcer. Top Finishes for A&M were soph omore Lawrence Felton, who suc cessfully defended his 60-yard hur dle title from last year, and senior Ian James, who received third place in the longjump. Felton ran the sprint in 7.27 sec onds to beat Reggie Jones of Hous ton by .07 seconds. “I didn’t get my best start, but I ran my race,” Felton said. “Last year when I won as a freshman, they thought it was a fluke. They can’t say that about me anymore.” James’jumped a 25-2 on his sec ond attempt to move from ninth to second. Frank Rutherford of Hous ton won with a jump of 25-5'A. The A&M women’s track team placed Fifth with 32 points. Texas and Houston tied for the team title, both Finishing with 110 points. The Aggies were led by Lisa Lan gston who placed second in the 60- yard hurdles and Brandy Stubble field, who had a second in the high jump. “I didn’t get started well, but I came on strong,” Langston said. Langston ran a 7.82 in the hurdles. TCU hopes to capture high seed in NCAAs Texas Christian may have clinched the Southwest Conference basketball title, but the Horned Frogs still have a lot at stake this week. Besides their 16th-ranking in the Associated Press poll, the Horned Frogs are after a high seeding in the NCAA playoffs — and they have a chance to make SWC history. Since round-robin play began in 1925, no school has won the basket ball championship by five games. TCU could accomplish that feat. The Horned Frogs have games left against Houston in Fort Worth on Wednesday night and at Rice on Saturday night. TCU rallied to beat the Texas Tech Red Raiders 52-44 on Satur day. “We’re after a high seeding now and we’re going to have to win the rest of our games and probably the post-season tournament to get it,” said TCU Coach Jim Killingsworth. “It’s important we not come out flat anymore like we did against Tech.” Arkansas knocked off Baylor 71- 67 and the Bears'fell five games be hind TCU. Texas A&M beat Rice 63-60 in the other SWC game while Texas was whipped by Fordham 60- 48 in a non-conference game. Houston had five conference losses going into Sunday’s game against Southern Methodist. “It was amazing,” Killingsworth said. “I came back out of the locker room to find out we had been docked two points.” He arrived at the bench to dis cover a bucket scored by Carven Holcombe at the buzzer didn’t count. Officials had decided during the halftime break that Holcombe was in possession of the ball when he was fouled and not shooting. “I’ve had the flu and was too weak to argue,” Killingsworth said.“I couldn’t even put up a good fight.” TCU increased its overall record to 22-4 and 13-1 in conference play. It was the Horned Frogs’ 24th con secutive victory in Daniel-Meyer Col iseum. ' Tech Coach Gerald Myers said TCU deserves to be where it’s ranked. “TCU showed the caliber of team they are today,” Myers said. Myers said TCU should do well in the NCAA tournament, except against power teams that can go down the middle. “TCU could have trouble with big teams in the middle,” Myers said. “They play a matchup zone to com bat that weakness but it could hurt.” The winner of the SWC post-sea son tournament gets the confer ence’s only automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs. SMU uses three-pointers to post 79-73 win over UH HOUSTON (AP) — Junior for ward Carlton McKinney hit five of Southern Methodist’s 10 three-point shots while scoring 23 points in a 79- 73 Mustang win over the University of Houston on Sunday. Kato Armstrong added 20 for SMU, now 14-12 and 5-9 in South west Conference play. Houston fell to 16-9 and 8-6. The Cougars were paced by Greg Anderson with 19 points and Tim Hobby’s 16 points. McKinney’s fifth three-pointer put SMU ahead 52-50, and Arm strong’s three-point shot extended SMU’s lead to 62-54 with 7:30 re maining in the game. A five-point play that was started by Scott Johnson’s three-pointer and finished by Terry Thomas’ two free throws provided SMU with a 75-63 lead. Houston had mounted a 17-7 lead early in the game as Anderson and Rickie Winslow each had six points. But McKinney erased that with four three-point shots that helped tie the game 30-30 with four minutes left in the first half. Johnson connected for SMU’s sixth three-pointer of the first half for a 33-30 advantage, but Anderson scored four of his 11 first-half points to bring the Cougars back to a 38-37 halftime lead. The Mustangs made 10 of their 53 successful three-point shots this season in Sunday’s game. McKinney said the shots made at the three-point goal line were “just part of the flow of the game. “Their zone defense gave us the shot, and since we couldn’t penetrate inside, it’s fortunate it went in,” Mc Kinney said. SMU Coach Dave Bliss hinted that Houston’s size made the shots nec essary. “The three-pointers were there because they kept pushing us out further,” Bliss said. “The shot has really created a great spectator sport.” Houston Coach Pat Foster ad mitted his team didn’t play well against the three-point shot. “Defensively, we didn’t do a good job. They had a lot of good shooters we didn’t come out far enough on,” Foster said. “They had a lot more spirit and determination.” Anderson was saddened by losing his home finale. “We came out to play, but SMU outplayed us. They had the intensity and emotion and everything they were throwing up was going in,” An derson said. 1st meeting for 12th Man set for today Texas A&M Coach Jackie Sherrill has set 5 p.m. today as the first organizational meeting of the 12th Man Kickoff Team.
