Rollie White Col iseum. The Lady Aggies, 9-15 and 5-9 in the Southwest Conference, threat ened to turn it into a blowout several times, but the Owls came back from every deficit to make it a tight game. “We lost the lead a couple of times and they tied it, but we just did not die,” A&M Coach Lynn Hickey said. The Lady Aggies, led by forward Evelyn Sanders’ 21 points, shot 50 percent while the Owls ended up shooting a meager 34.8 percent for the £ame. Sanders also led the Lady Aggies with 14 rebounds. The Lady Aggies took control early when senior forward Paula Crutcher made a layup to break a 6- 6 deadlock, and Sanders grabbed a rebound of her own shot and hit a soft five-foot jumper to give A&M a 10-6 lead. The Lady Aggies built a lead as high as 11 points at 27-16 and went to the half up 35-26. The Owls came out hot to start the second half as Rice center Edith Ad ams went on a rampage, hitting four shots in a row to pull the Owls within three at 37-34. Rice forward Holly Jones and guard Dede Brantley each canned baskets to put the Owls ahead 38-37. But the Lady Aggies came back to tie it at 40 and took the lead for good behind a 17-foot jumper by guard Traci Thomas. “The biggest thing about this game was that a bunch of young kids saw that they could beat a team that has beaten Houston twice and Texas Tech once,” Hickey said. “It was a total team effort.” Crite gets career-high 30 points to lead Aggies past Owls 63-60 By Loyd Brumfield Assistant Sports Editor Winston Crite put on a clinic Saturday night. Texas A&M’s senior forward scored a career-high 30 points and was a one-man show as the Aggies downed the Rice Owls 63- 60 in front of 3,006 fans in G. Rollie White Coliseum. “I always want the ball,” Crite said. “The team did a good job of getting it to me.” Indeed it did as Crite had 14 points in the first half and 17 in the second half, including 11 of A&M’s final 13 points. The win avenged a 69-67 loss at the hands of the Owls Jan. 21 in Houston. The Aggies im proved their record to 14-11 overall and 6-8 in the Southwest Conference. “Things got kind of shaky for a moment, but this time we did what it took to win,” Crite said. Rice, 8-16 and 2-11 in the SWC, got off to a quick start to take an early 21-16 lead before a Crite dunk and an incredible leaping behind-the-back layup by guard Darryl McDonald pulled the Aggies within one with seven minutes and 15 seconds left in the half. Rice held on to a slim lead for the next four minutes until Crite sank three shots in a row — two long-distance jumpers and a dunk — to put the Aggies ahead 30-29. The game was very tight throughout the second half, as both teams switched leads until the 12-minute mark when for ward Tadd Thomas hit a 17-foot jump shot to give the Aggies a 46- 45 lead. Rice tied it once after that, but it never regained the lead. “Rice is improving,” A&M Coach Shelby Metcalf said. “They’ve got some good shooters. Photo by Dtin to Rice’s Greg Hines goes over Todd Holloway of Texas A&M and dunks the ball. The basket was disallowed for charging. You can see why they gave Baylor so much trouble in Waco.” In addition to his career-high scoring night, Crite also led A&M with nine rebounds, and guard Todd Holloway helpied with 17 p>oints. Rice was paced by forward Greg Hines with 15 pKiints. The Owls had a chance to pul it out in the end, when guard Ronald Robertson sank a thret pKiint shot with 1:15 remaining!!) reduce A&M’s lead to one at 61- 60, but McDonald came upwittn crucial steal and Crite sank two free throws to seal the win.
