BUT REAL HEAVYWEIGHTS WHEN RESULTS REALLY COUNT. “Two households, both alike in dig nity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene. From ancient grudge break to new mutiny. Where civil blood makes civil hand unclean. From forth the fatal loins of these two foes A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life; Whose misadventur’d piteous over throws Doth with their death bury their par ents’ strife. ” Those lines from the prologue of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” provide the best summary of his most famous tragic play. About 1,800 people attended the National Shakespeare Company’s production of that play Saturday night in Rud der Auditorium. The Valentine’s Day performance was sponsored by MSC Town Hall Broadway. The National Shakespeare Com pany, a 14-member traveling group dedicated to bringing Shakespeare’s plays to all parts of the country, pre sented a simple, straightforward in terpretation of the play. The acting was clear and competent, but there was no fire in the performance, ex cept in some of the play’s more hu morous parts. The title roles were performed by Christopher Todd and Carol Dear- man. Both were convincing in their roles as lovers — as long as they were not together. When Romeo was speaking of his love to others or in soliloquy, his feelings were obvious. When Juliet spoke to her nurse, well-played by Eleanore Tapscott, she captured the spirit of a teen-age girl talking to her best friend about her new boyfriend. Unfortunately, there was no spark between the ‘lovers’ when they were together. Lance Spellerberg provided a few good moments in his role as Mercu- tio, Romeo’s best friend. His lines in cluded some of the most humorous and suggestive puns that Shake speare ever wrote. And in his role as Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt, Timothy Stickney clearly showed the deep, baseless hatred between the families of Romeo and Juliet. Dan Snow gave warmth and con sideration to his role as Friar Law rence. His desire to see the families’ feud end and the lovers unite was evident in Snow’s performance. Bill Blank, who played Romeo’s cousin Benvolio, looked good, but was un able to deliver a line that could be fully understood by the audience. The best moment of the play was not the famous balcony scene, but the duel between Tybalt and Mercu- tio. Tybalt is looking for a duel with Romeo, who refuses to fight because he doesn’t want to worsen the situa tion between his family and Juliet’s. Mercutio wants to defend Romeo and begins fighting Tybalt. The three-way duel and swordplay was well-choreographed and exciting. Spellerberg was able to deliver Mer- cutio’s final words, a wonderful Shakespearian play on words, with full humor, but without taking away from the seriousness of the scene. AMARILLO (AP) — Authorities found checks, food stamps and other non-negotiable currency Sun day taken in an armored car rob bery. But the evidence yielded no clues about the masked robber’s identity. Police initially estimated that $500,000 was taken in the robbery, but an official of Rochester Ar mored Express disputed the esti mate. The bandit, brandishing a pistol. approached two guards about 9:10 p.m. Saturday as they were unload ing the armored car at the First Na tional Bank of Amarillo. Police Sgt. Phil Dean said the rob ber took weapons from two guards, handcuffed them in the back of the armored van and then drove the ve hicle to a nearby parking lot. Dean said witnesses told police the bandit jumped out of the armored vehicle with the money and sped off in a van parked in a nearby alley. Large one bedroom, furnished apartment.
