Hammons Sports Writer The Texas A&M women’s tennis team continued its impressive sea son-opening week Tuesday at the Omar Smith Tennis Center by thrashing North Texas State 8-1. A&M Coach Bobby Kleinecke said the team looked strong overall. Al though No. 1 player Kim Labus- chagne had difficulty in her match, the other five players had little diffi culty. Labuschagne, still fighting off the flu, still managed to win in straight sets over Lidwien Loonen 6-4, 7-5. No. 2 Laura Liong defeated Cara Paparhonis 6-1, 6-3. Cindy Craw ford, playing No. 3 singles, also won easily, beating Terry Johnson 6-1,6- 1. In other singles play, No. 4 Kellie Dorman beat Alex Liske 6-2, 6-3; No. 5 Lisa Keller won over Holly Pugsley 6-0, 6-1, and Jenifer Jones defeated Holly Ricker 6-4, 6-0. In the No. 1 doubles match, La buschagne teamed up with Keller to defeat Loonen and Paparhonis 6-1, 6-1. The only defeat for A&M came in No. 2 doubles, where Liske and Ricker won over Liong and Tones 7- 5 2-6 7-5 J In No. 3 doubles, Dorman and Crawford beat Pugsley and Johnson 6-2, 6-3. Kleinecke said the doubles matches were more shaky than sin gles because all three pairs were playing their first match as a team. He said he was happy with the play of Labuschagne and Liong in the first two positions. He also said the other four positions were still be ing fought over by the other players. The next action for the team is on Feb. 10 when the Aggies host the University of Texas-San Antonio. Labuschagne, however, will be play ing in the ITCA Indoor Champion ships in Richmond, Va., which start Thursday. The tournament is only for the top 32 players in the country. ay n (S to $8 | wm , c h3#| e s of^‘ ftme^ esses. i eJC ho ’ 1 love.
