You won’t experience hair-rais ing, heart-stopping, white water as the river wincls its way through the desert. That kind of excitement is farther north in Taos, N.M., and southern Colorado, where the Rio Grande begins. Here, where the river marks the boundary between Texas and Mex ico, the agenda consists of leisurely floats between sheer cliff walls 1,800 feet high, gourmet meals cooked over coals under starry Southwes tern skies and vintage wines sipped out of tin cups while squatting in the brush. Any raft trip, though, is sure to offer some degree of excitement. On one three-day, two-night trip that ended at this camping village at Big Bend National Park, one inci dent broke the gentle pace punc tuated hy bird-watching and friendly water lights. A band of rampaging burros, an gry at finding their stomping grounds occupied by overnight hu mans, terrorized some of the novices of the outdoors, who were sure the donkeys had murderous intent. While river veterans slept soundly, tenderfoot campers were kept awake by an all-night serenade of hee-hawing, cringing as the bur ros staged lively jousting matches and kicked up clouds of dust. Several companies offer guided rafting trips on the Rio Grande through five canyons in the Big Bend area. Colorado Canyon is 25 miles upstream from the park’s west boundary, while Mesa de Anguila is 10 miles downstream inside the park. Santa Elena and Mariscal can yons are probably the most popular in the park. Santa Elena is eight miles of sometimes overhanging cliffs and the well-known Rockslide rapid. “No accidents, but there’s been upsets at the Rockslide,” said Steve Harris, president of Terlingua- based Far Flung Adventures. “It’s where the canyon wall came off and it’s 300 yards of rocks. You have to scout it and know where you’re going and not enter blind alleys. It may be impossible to get out.” The l ight Squeeze at Mar. Canyon can get rafters in spot. Rear Adm. Richard Truly, the NASA associate administrator for space flight, said the agency does not “feel comfortable” yet in committing to a proposed rocket escape system. Truly added that the agency will fly the shuttle even if such a system is not installed. However, Truly said that the agency is going to proceed with the design and installation of a system that could be used to blow away a space shuttle hatch. This would permit the crew to jump to safety in the event of an emergency. fleet to he grounded until rockets and other parts couldi* designed. Truly said that in an emergency on the ground or in a low-speed con trolled flight, the crew members could blow the hatch away and then leave the craft. Parachutes and other personal safety equipment are being devel oped, he said. Truly made the comments during a news conference in which he and two other NASA officials reported on the status of the agency’s recov ery from the explosion on Jan. 28, 1986, of Ghallenger.
