The Jewish captives were to be freed following the release of U.S. hostages held by pro-Iranian Lebanese militias, the govern ment officials told the Associated Press on condition of anonymity. The United States has con firmed it secretly shipped arms to Iran but has denied that the main purpose was to win freedom for the American hostages. But Is rael’s government has said the hostage issue was decisive when it agreed to send the weapons to Iran. The officials told the AP that Israel also hoped to receive infor mation on the fate of three sol diers who have been missing since the 1982 Israeli invasion of Leb anon. Fourteen members of Leb anon’s small Jewish community have been kidnapped, and at least three have been found killed. A group calling itself the Organiza tion of the Oppressed on Earth has claimed responsibility for the killings and says it holds some of the others still missing. i njii tee. ■Hilly Fallin, an attorney the firm, said the subpoenaed payment instructions and records of tele phone calls between Maule and the buyers have been turned over to au thorities as requested. “I’m not con cerned about any wrongdoing on our part,” he added. White House spokesman Larry Speakes said “we don’t agree with” Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger’s contention that Rea gan acted on bad advice when he de cided there were responsible offi cials to deal with in Iran other than the “lunatics” who run the country. Reagan, embroiled in the most se rious crisis of his presidency, has de fended fiis decision to sell arms to Iran as part of a secret diplomatic initiative to re-establish ties with the strategically-placed Persian Gulf na tion. But he says he was unaware that money in connection with the sales was being funneled through a Swiss bank account to Contra rebels battling the Nicaraguan govern ment. The money was made available at a time when direct and indirect gov ernment military assistance to the Contras was prohibited by law, and there was evidence that the Justice Department was looking into the op erations of a privately financed sup port program for Contra rebels in Nicaragua. The president announced Tues day that his administration would seek appointment of an indepen dent council to probe the issue. In Congress, House Democratic Leader Jim Wright of Texas and COP Leader Bob Michel of Illinois announced they would oversee cre ation of a special, 15-member “blue ribbon panel” to coordinate the in vestigation. Senate leaders agreed on a com mittee of their own to include 13 members, although a spokesman for COP Leader Bob Dole said his boss and Democratic Leader Robert Byrd of West Virginia had not yet con cluded arrangements. □F2JF . q o£ S ' fcT V &>' <c9 tSZ 1 " oo O' 1 ” . 9 C'> 1 0 ”-* 15 eS 0 '* oA 0' <,v<V c „«>' Co'° .c' 0 ° *° & $ CHUN KING yf ■ CHINESE RESTAURANT ^ In now ready to serve the gourmet Chinese food lovers of Bryan/College Station — GRAND OPENING — Sunday evening Buffet All You Can Eat 4 a Q15L 5pm-8pm X ■ over lO items jk ® Relaxing atmosphere, friendly service and mouth tempting foods such as "Treasure Basket" and "Love Boat" Daily Luncheon Specials! 7 Days a Week Lunch 1 1:00 am-2:30 pm Dinner 5:00 pm-10:00 pm 1673 Briarcrest Drive At Ardan Crossing Across from Steak 6?
