Student Y collecting money for needy families’ holidays 11 imii By John Jarvis Reporter The Texas A&M Student Y Asso ciation is still collecting money for a Thanksgiving fundraiser to benefit needy families in the Bryan-College Station area, says John Byers, Chris tian programs director for the orga nization. ! Byers says the money will be turned over to Twin City Mission, Inc., which will then buy food in bulk. The mission will put the food into baskets and distribute the bas kets to needy families, he says. JoAn Sebesta, executive director of the mission, says although the mission needs canned goods, food for the needy is needed all year, not just on the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. “We give food baskets away 365 days a year,” Sebesta says. The mission started in 1964 and has four shelters for needy people. Byers says the food drive has been sponsored by the Student Y for at least four years and probably has gone on longer than that. In the past, he says, canned food has been collected in residence halls Warped and cafeterias for the Thanksgiving drive, but this year money was col lected instead because the Student Y felt it would better benefit the fami lies. Byers estimates Student Y has col lected about $300 so far. Byers says that $300 was the tenta tive goal set by the organization at the beginning of the effort. The Student Y is composed of about 150 A&M students. Eight are involved in the Thanksgiving pro- ject. f or more information about do nating to the project, call David Mendoza at 260-4477. by Scott McCullar /ri G00P EVE A/I//G, THIS 15 MERRITT JZNHms WITH A WRPD SPECIAL BULLETIN? * THE TEXAS A«/M BOARD OF REGENTS HAS JUST DECLARED THE A/EWLV completed bonfire STACK AS A MEMORIAL? (heel) By Mike Sullivan Staff Writer The restaurants listed below were inspected Nov. 11 through Tuesday by the Brazos County Health Department. The information is based on food service establishment re ports. SCORED BETWEEN 95 AND 100: • Schlotzsky’s at 2501 S. Texas Ave. in College Station was inspected by Mike Lester. Score — 98. Two one-point violations were noted in the report because there was a hole in a men’s bath room wall and some cloth towels were being used improperly. SCORED BETWEEN 90 AND 95: • Taco Bell at 310 Harvey Road in College Station was in spected by Mike Lester. Score — 90. Four points were subtracted in the report because an outside storage building was not prop erly sealed with a self-closing door. Two points were deducted in the report because some food items were left uncovered in a walk-in cooler. Another two points were sub tracted in the report because some food was being thawed in standing water, and a wastebas ket in a bathroom had no lid. WHY DO YOU WOMEN FIND NED SO ATTRACTIVE ? BUT HE'3 A MUTANT/ HE CAN'T EVEN TALK/ rt'VE FINALLY FOUND YOU' THE PERFECT MAN/ 1 ' I David Jefferson, a registered sanitarian at the department, says restaurants with scores of 95 or above generally have excellent oper ations and facilities. Jefferson says restaurants with scores in the 70s or low 80s usually have serious violations in the health report. Scores can be misleading, Jefferson says, because restaurants can get the same score by having several minor violations or a few major violations. He says the major violations can he cause for closing a restaurant while many minor violations can be corrected during the inspection. Point deductions, or violations, in the report range from one point (minor violation) to five points (major violation). Jefferson says the department might close a restaurant if the score is below 60, the personnel has infectious diseases, the restau rant lacks adequate refrigeration, there is a sewage backup in the building or the restaurant has a complete lack of sanitization for the food equipment. The department inspects each restaurant about every six months. Jefferson says a follow-up inspection is sometimes required if a restaurant has a four- or five-point violation that cannot be corrected during the inspection, or if there are numerous small violations. Inspectors as the department are registered sanitarians. Cadets to march in Austin University News Service More than 2,000 Texas A&M cadets will march through down town Austin Thursday afternoon as part of the traditional Aggie Corps Trip before the University of Texas-Texas A&M football game. The cadets step off at 2:30 p.m. at Congress and Trinity. The parade turns left on East 11th and will eventually disband near the State Capitol Building. Retired Maj. Gen. Waymond C. Nutt, U.S. Air Force, will re ceive the salutes from the 39 Corps units as they pass the re viewing stand at Seventh and Congress. Led by Corps Commander Garland Wilkinson of Littlefield, the parade includes the Parsons’ Mounted Cavalry and the 300- member Aggie Band. White hints merger might have merit AUSTIN (AP) — Gov. Mark White, while voicing opposition to proposed state college mergers, hinted Tuesday that a plan to com bine two South Texas schools may have merit. White flatly rejected proposals for mergers of Texas Woman’s Univer sity and North Texas State and of the University of Houston-Down town and Texas Southern Univer sity. But he sounded less emphatic about a suggested merger of Corpus Christi State University and Texas A&I at Kingsville. Some boosters of the plan say it could increase the numoer of doctoral programs avail able to South Texas students.
