ICAA will delay action on SMU ■ DALLAS (AP) — An NCAA com- miitee agreed Monday to postpone action on Southern Methodist’s ap- “tal of last year’s restrictions on its Jtball scholarships after the uni- rsity asked for a delay, saying any iction now could be embarrassing. JSMU issued a statement saying Athletic Director Bob Hitch and fac ulty representative Lonnie Kliever requested the postponement before tht NCAA Committee on Infrac tions Monday in Kansas City, Mo. The committee voted unanimously to postpone the appeal. ■reSMU said Kliever asked the panel to| “postpone action on the appeal until the current charges of continu ing violations of NCAA regulations inlthe SMU football program are fully investigated and finally re solved.” diever said the appeal still de ni the l e Tint id plan irticipai ‘tition 2 ?s beste indav ame n ?rs for es over ) win > N > S I N N N Zzzzzzzzzz Looking For The Perfect Gift... Last week, former SMU line backer David Stanley said in a tele vision interview that he got $25,000 to play for the Mustangs when he joined in 1983 and continued to get payments of $750 a month even af ter the school was placed on proba tion last year. Hitch and other athletic officials have denied the allegations, but SMU President L. Donald Shields has said he will call a special board of governors meeting to discuss a plan of action. If Stanley’s claims prove true, SMU could lose its football program for two years under the NCAA’s so- called “death penalty” adopted last year. Last year’s sanctions against SMU were levied because of cash pay ments to players by boosters and other NCAA violations. The school was banned from offering any schol arships during the first year of a three-year period and limited to only 15 out of an allowable 30 schol arships the second year. On Sept. 1, SMU submitted an ap peal to the NCAA committee for limited relief from the scholarship restrictions for the 1987-88 aca demic year. In Kansas City, Hitch confirmed he met with NCAA officials but would not comment on the meeting. There's nothing grandparents like better than a call from a grandchild in college. But if you do accidentally happen to interrupt Lawrence, you ought to have something worth telling them. For example, you could mention that you called using AT&T Long Distance Service because you can depend on AT&T's high quality service and exceptional value. And then you can tell them that AT&T gives you immediate credit if you dial a wrong number. And that you can count on AT&T for clear long distance connections. Finally, of course, ^ you should quickly reassure them that you're eating enough, then let them hurry back to the TV to catch the rest of the Lennon Sisters' Blue Oyster Cult Medley.
