Central American aliens given tests for tuberculosis HARLINGEN (AP) — Chest X- ravs were given Thursday to more than 100 Central American aliens at a federal detention center who had positive skin tests for tuberculosis, officials say. The aliens were among those de tained by the Immigration and Nat uralization Service when the Casa Oscar Romero sanctuary in San Be nito said it was closing last month. INS assistant district director John Luvender says that of the 222 aliens under Casa Romero’s care who were turned over to the INS on Oct. 30 and later detained, 105 had positive skin tests for tuberculosis. Dr. Ralph Landsberg, director of medical services at the INS deten tion center w est of Port Isabel where the aliens are being held pending hearings, says it is not unusual for up to 50 percent of a group being tested to show positive for TB. He says the aliens from Casa Ro mero who were tested Thursday mostlv were f rom Guatemala, El Sal vador and Nicaragua. A positive skin test means some one may have been exposed to tu berculosis, and a chest X-ray is used to determine whether the disease is present. The state Health Department has been testing aliens detained at the center every two weeks since 1982, savs Van Fitzgerald, tuberculosis control program manager for the agency’s Public Health Region H based in Harlingen. “Because Casa Romero closed it has become a media event,” says Landsberg. “T here’s nothing differ ent today than the last five years.” "There’s an awful lot of tubercu losis in Central America, and that means many people have been ex posed to TB and have fought it off,” lie says. Fitzgerald says a vaccine available in Mexico and Central America that purportedly prevents TB will cause someone to test positive for life. He savs the number of aliens with posi tive TB skin tests may he clue to their taking the medicine. San Benito city officials recently ordered that Casa Romero, operated bv the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brownsville, he shut down. T he diocese closed the center Oct. 30 and transported 523 aliens from Central and South America to the INS office in Harlingen. Of the 523, 222 were taken to the Port Isabel processing center. The others were released or posted bond. Casa Romero continues to pro vide a place for Central Americans seeking sanctuary, and at mid-week it had about 90 occupants. Diocesan officials have asked to meet with San Benito authorities to discuss the situation. A meeting is planned for Fridav. WALT DISNEY WORLD COLLEGE PROGRAM Walt Disney World Co.
